I had an appointment today and I intentionally left the oil level low so it could be seen. I asked the tech, how low was it? He said "2 QUARTS" I asked him how the h--l can a 17000 mile car be consuming oil? I want to know if anyone else has experienced this? I can tell you the car has not been to the track yet and I just replaced my first set of tires about 500 miles ago (16,500 miles).
LS's, including the LSAs, are prone to oil consumption, but with that being said 2 quarts between changes is a lot! I would get a catch can, but still keep an eye on it, that is excessive to me and may indicate another problem. Do you yourself check the oil after they change it? May be low from the start also.

I've got the Service Manager at my dealership telling me to use Mobil1 and the Service Rep saying its absolutely not necessary. My lean is towards Mobil1, but......

Tell him to pound sand. If the oil meets the spec set forth by GM, you are fine. I personally use Amsoil Z-Rod because it has more zinc in it and I drive my ZL1 hard daily.

My CTS-V was using oil. The Cadillac had the free oil changes at the dealership every 5000 miles and if I didn't bring it by the dealership to check the oil at about 3000 it would show the low oil light and need more than a quart. They did a consumption test twice in the 20,000 miles I drove the car and told me it had to use a full quart in 1000 miles before gm would replace the engine. I never got there but it was heading that way fast. I traded it. I never did figure out why it was burning all that oil. But the power was good right to day I traded it. Never have shown any signs of oil consumption on my ZL1 at all. But.... I have had 4 different sets of pistons in the car in about 12,000 miles, 376, 417, 427, 434. I generally just change the oil when I break in a new motor on the ZL1. I'm expecting to run this one for a while though.

Both LS2 engines in my GTO ate a quart every 5k and both engines in my zl1 eat the same. I followed the break in procedure for both engines. So it seems pretty normal.... granted I've had to the replace/rebuild the engine in both cars...

Let the dealer do an oil analysis (it used to be termed oil economy test) to see if there's a potential problem somewhere.
The military tests the oil in aircraft motors to look for abnormal amounts of stuff that should not be there. The oil chemical breakdown also tells if there is excessive heat, poor fuel/air mixtures, or any other contamination/unusual wear. They use a magnetic tool to look for metals, and break down the oil into it's base chemical components. It's MUCH cheaper than pulling a giant motor out of the aircraft for a teardown inspection. The military is not subject to gubment "hours of operation" mandated teardown/rebuild rules. I would guess if you have a laboratory at your disposal, you can save lots of expensive (unnecessary) teardown inspections. I've read where a number of well-funded NHRA teams have certain analytical equipment at their disposal.

That could certainly be the case.. But the SS takes 8 freakin' quarts, how much for the ZL1?
