Actually there are still some 5.1 surround sound DVD's available. Mixed correctly, the sound quality and surround effects were awesome.

I had a couple of high end 5.1 surround sound systems in some of my cars back in the day when there were really good aftermarket 5.1 surround sound processors by Alpine, Clarion, Technics, Kenwood and Sony. They sounded very good...

I think Mbober was referring to SACD and DVD-A...5.1 music only.

Use the equalizer and turn down the mid range and the speaker is no longer active. You need to adjust the equalizer on all the various inputs to the amplifier.

Correct.
Most of the audio only 5.1 DVD's that I have are DVD-A, but the surround sound encoding was either Dolby Digital or DTS. Some of them had both Dolby and DTS which made them playable on most systems, even 2 channel, but on the DTS encoded DVD's if you did not have a DTS decoder, you got no audio at all.
