I'm not buying the "keep the costs down" angle. Rear floor mats would cost them less then $5 to make. If they are going to go to the trouble of adding front mats to a package then rear mats should be included as well. Especially considering rear floor mats are rarely sold by themselves.

You don't need rear mats anyway... the only people that can sit back there are toddlers, midgets, or amputees... and in any case, there won't be any shoes on the floor... so no worries

I went out and bought rear mats while my car was on order. Turned out they're not small enough to fit back there. None of the ones I've seen have been. Oh well - other people usually decide to find another ride when they find out they'd have to be in my back seat anyway!

+1.

This is the kind of oversight by GM that hurts them, along with the disparity between the driver and passenger power seats (driver 6-way, passenger 2-way). Foreign makers don't skimp on details like this.

That's also why you normally pay more for a foreign competitor. All of those things add up for GM and keep the costs down. You pay for what you get really.

I'd say if all you have to voice concern about is a pair of floor mats for a dinky backseat, they did pretty good

As "reliable" as their suppliers have been? Could cost more than you think, especially in terms of time.

Most cars do not have ANY floormats whatsoever, you usually have to order them as an option or they are included with some of the option packages. Dealers often throw them in as a bonus, because they are cheap but this is not uncommon.

Few cars that I have bought or ordered had rear floor mats. I was really surprised that my 2004 Sebring Vert did have them.

It's a hint! Like everyone says, the back seat is for show anyway.
