How can you Afford that?

There's a billboard that annoys the hell out of me I pass everyday.. It has a picture of a zl1 with the text "new camaros starting at $19,988" The zl1 looks nothing like a 1lt starting at 20,000$.

My ZL1 was in the blowout sale for moving out the '14's. I got it for 50K brand new. I traded my Z71 for 38k

Except to the untrained eye, the resemblance is remarkably similar. It's the same basic car and chassis, with the ZL1 having a lot more content and performance, obviously, and a lot of changes that aren't visible to the general public, like the different suspension setup.

This thread is a bit confusing in that the Camaro hasn't historically been an expensive car, until now. It was always a "poor man's Corvette" which is why I look quizzical after reading tales about people asking them how they afford their Camaros. The expensive ones like the Z/28 really didn't exist until now, blowing even Corvettes out of the water in terms of price and performance. I would think most people would remember back to previous generations where the Camaro was a pretty basic car, all in all, even if it had a bit of performance.

Well I emailed six different dealerships. I used $1000 private offer and $2000 cash back. I was going to finance through my credit union so apparently they came up with another discount. The first "final" offer was $28,400 but I showed it to all the other dealers and went with the lowest one.

I also used the $7000 from my trade-in and about $1700 from my GM Card earnings. The dealer was actually kind of surprised it all went through but I had already contacted GM directly to make sure all of my discounts applied and that I was still able to use my earnings.

I think most people as said a few times above just don't realize the price of a car.. and most of the times the price they quote is for the ZL1 or Z28 60K +

Maybe because they are rare? I don't know what it is but I have been asked. Then again maybe people just aren't familiar with the higher end models. I live in Omaha and rarely see the camaro. I see nothing but mustangs and challengers. When j started shopping I too was thinking I was going to be at least 30,000+

I'm pretty sure an untrained eye could pick out the differences of a zl1 and 1lt if they were shopping on a car lot. They would immediately notice this is not the car on the billboard whatsoever then find out that car actually cost around 53k not 20k.

I don't have a trained eye for other cars like I do the 5th gen but I can still tell if it's a performance model or base model with a few observations.

This happens at work quite a bit. I tell people they need to know how to car shop. My car stickered at $41k+, but via discounts the price was at $34,500 and on top of that I qualified for 0% interest. I always tell people that there are minivans in the parking lot that cost more than my car. It looks more expensive than it is. I think the median car price is close to $32K making the Camaro right in there for pricing.

This is especially true when they are upside down on their car. My brother has an Equinox base model and his payments are $570

Yeah, I remember when the Camaro was lot less expensive. My dad bought a 1985 Z28 for around 12k. Now it cost $75k. I know these cars are day and night compared to 30 years ago. Chevy has really done a good job at creating a Camaro that spans from 22k to 75k so everyone can afford one.
