I have both C5 03 Z06, 2010 Camaro highly modded out.
I did a half mile event 2 years ago, mainly raced against my buddy with a 02 Z06 supercharged, i would think somewhere around 650hp, my Camaro has 860hp.
I would say that we ran about 8 passes against each other, he took 3 of the runs, I took the others. HP to weight ratio, I would take weight over the HP any day.
If you were talking about road racing, the C5 Z06 is a awesome car, I would much rather drive my Vette verses my Camaro, and my Camaro is built for road racing.
That's my 2 cents.
Michael

Very good feed back guys greatly appreciated. I see a bunch of C5 Zs for teens in price range. Was looking for a cheaper but capable and V8 powered option to my SS for road course use. Light weight is a definitely winner in this battle so in this case the Z wins. I was just wondering how they ran in terms of NA power delivery that's all. I see many Gen 5 NA cars in the 10s but like the previous post said only a few with NA C5 Zs will be that fast. I drove a C5 Z and in good condition it wasn't that fast actually on par with my SS. I loved the handling though, felt like an S2000 and was tight is heck. Makes the SS feel sloppy. C6 Z felt a little too heavy to me in comparison. I'll see if I could trade my SS for a C5 Z but honestly there is still something about my modded SS and that is how it sits at speed. Even at 140 it feels like nothing can go wrong where as the Zs feel like you could loose your rear any minute. Maybe I just need to learn the Vette more.

I personally would hold out from the c5z in favor of the c6z. The c5z just is not enough of an upgrade for me to justify it. I speak from experience as there was a time I seriously contemplated making the same move as you are thinking of. I was even to the point where I had a deal made (straight trade) on a very very low mileage one, all that was to fill out the paper work. I just couldn't do it when the time came to make the decision. C6zs are just on a whole other level in every aspect (as expected being the next generation). Plus you wouldn't be taking such a step back in interior and age from the camaro.

You are correct about the C5Z, at speeds of 140ish the vette has a lot of aero lift, (front end). Very unsettling at times especially at tracks like Road Atlanta.
Thousands of dollars later, new front splitter, under tray, big ass wing.
No more aero lift.
Michael

My Camaro starts feeling pretty floaty at speed too.

I put full Eibach on my 10SS after first 140 run, after I raced a 97 TA and took it up to 176 it didn't even feel like I was moving that fast. My car sits an inch lower to the ground im very happy with the upgrade!

Must have had a nice long stretch of road to do that.

I love my C5Z. Just a few bolt on's is all it takes. Simply not carrying a lot of weight.

That could probably be fixed with wider sticker tires.

Thumbs up

Loved my C5Z wished I never sold it. Much different feeling car obviously than the C5. Long tubes and a Vararam was all that mine had, but with the low weight it felt mighty powerful. Changing out the stereo and shifter made a huge difference as well.
