It's on the lower end, but still fine. IMO these engines like to run better on the low end of the stick. I never used to fill mine anymore then halfway between the 2 dots when I had my V6.
The SS calls from 8qt's, lot of people only run 7qts (I do), there are even some that run 6.5qt's. |

They did mention that it may take time to break in, but my oil was checked at slightly over 4200 miles, and had no oil in it whatsoever so this seems like it fits in the exception criteria. It came back 6 quarts low, but realistically I don't know when it burned that last quart out, but imagining it didn't burn out that last drop of oil until the very day I went to get the oil change, it burned 6 quarts in 4000 miles. That comes out to 1.5 quarts per 1000 miles on average at the minimum. If the last drop was burned out earlier it could be using even more than 1.5 quarts ever 1k miles again. Im just glad the engine didnt blow up on me unexpectedly one day. I will definitely keep the hawk eye out on it myself just in case wanted to point out im not trying to bash the dealership just lookng for suggestions. I'm going to go through with the tests and see where I get from there. hopefully I can get it squared away. I can confirm there is no oil light on the 2011 v6. |

....it should look a two stroke engine leaving a smoke trail if it's burning that kind of oil...your clearly not driving it hard enough when it's critically low on oil...if you were you'd be able to look inside the block where the rod came thru and put your finger on the problem

Absolutely not! A low oil pressure light is not a low oil indicator. By the time the oil pressure is low enough to set off this light, you have either been committing violence on your engine for a long time, or something just punched a hole in the block.

OP is there a lot of blue smoke coming out the back when your driving? Are there any puddles of oil where you park? Has there been a compression test on each of the cylinders?

There is one. I have seen it before. If I drive really aggressive. I mean lagging in gears to I can hear the exhaust. I mean driving like I stole it!! RPMs up.. It will consume some oil.. I have seen it twice.. Not sure about the V6..

You would think there would be a lot of smoke coming out of the back, but no. also no leaks at all. A buddy of mine works at a gm dealership and I looked at it under the lift myself. Also Im pretty confident if there was a leak that drastic the dealership would have addressed that instead of being as confused as me right now. So the big question is... since its not smoking like a chimney and no oil leaking I have no idea where the oil is going. I dont know about the compression tests, but after these oil consumptions tests ill go from there. Ill keep an eye out on it and let you know what I find out. It may be a few months until this gets resolved but ill update this when I have more information. |

My previous Camaro was a 2011 1LS. It consumed about 1 quart of oil every 2500 miles. So, I always had two quarts with me wherever I went. I checked the dip stick once every two weeks, and at 2500 miles after an oil change, I'd add a quart, buy another next time I was at a store, and rotate the extra to be next in line to be added. After another 2500 miles, it would be up for an oil change (I had it changed every 5000 miles.) I was always prepared in case it got worse, but it stayed steady at those intervals. I figure that was somewhat normal, but what you are describing sounds much more problematic.

I am not trying to stir the shite here, but since I drive a V6, this thread, and the resulting discussions, do interest me.
Now, I have always relied on my dipsticks to check the oil level in my cars, and the red light in my dashboards has always been an "idiot" light warning about low oil pressure. For 35+ years now. That being said, while I wouldn't rely on them completely, the discussion about "low oil level" versus "low oil pressure" indicators got my interest, so I checked my 2013 owners manual. I read that the red light in the dashboard, that looks like an oil can, is called the "Engine Oil Pressure Light", and if triggered, there would also be a message in the DIC. However, I couldn't find anything in the manual about a low oil level light, but I did find this bit about a message that may come up in the DIC: ENGINE OIL LOW — ADD OIL On some vehicles, this message displays when the engine oil level may be too low. Check the oil level before filling to the recommended level. If the oil is not low and this message remains on, take the vehicle to your dealer for service. See Engine Oil on page 10‑13."On some vehicles"?? Really?? How does one tell if their car has this feature? Anyone know for certain? (short of draining the oil to a low level and running the car of course....) |
