I'd go by condition and evidence of how it was treated and maintained over what the odometer says, thats what will predict how much life is left in the car.
We've all seen low mileage cars that are treated horribly die an early death, and we've all seen cars with 300,000k miles in better condition.

Sounds like a real good price if it has been kept up. Look to see if he has maintenance records/receipts. If it is good shape that is a good price. I wouldn't worry about brakes and such as those wear. But with those miles they should have been replaced a couple times. Maybe not too long ago.

My first question is what is your budget? Any particular reason you need to find something less expensive? Also, will this be your daily driver? The mileage on the car you are referring to was most likely a daily driver and was taken on trips and so forth. Just because the car has a lot of miles doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. People get so scared of mileage for some reason. Plus, you can tell just by talking to someone about their car if they have maintained it properly. If you do purchase the car go through everything. Change all the fluids, plugs, wires, air filter, cabin filter, etc. These are VERY reliable engines and even if it hasn't been maintained to exact specifications more than likely it will be fine. Good luck!

It is a good price, but I think you should wait. That car has 72k on it now, which isn't too bad, but it's awfully close to 100k.... After you buy it, 100k will come up quick... probably about the same time the new 2016 - 2017 is hitting the streets in large numbers. You will be sitting in a 7 year old Camaro, that has over 100k miles. It'll be aged by one refresh and one totally new model.
If your plan is to upgrade to a 2017, you will get killed on resale value at that time. I don't know how things work nowadays, but it used to be that 100k was the magic number where dealers would send traded used cars straight to the wholesalers. In other words, they don't want those high mileage cars on their own used car lots, so they sold them cheap to the guys with the buy here/pay here lots. If you were planning to keep the car, I'd say check it out real good and if it's well cared for, buy it. But since you are planning to trade in a year or two, I say avoid it. Save your money and trade in your current car in a couple of years. You'll be better off.

Waaaaayyyyy too many miles for me, but then.... I haven't bought a "used" (and potentially abused) car for many years.

I got my 2SS with 27k miles for $20500.00, I bought it from an older couple in their 70s that were down sizing. They drove it some but not a lot. It sat in the garage and was well taken care of. I saw plenty of SSs for that price or higher with more miles. My car is bone stock. For me this is a much better car than one that was modded and beat by a young guy for 50 or 60k miles. The garage queen is what you want. There is no substitute for low miles and being garaged.

Given that the 6th gen is just around the corner and you're planning to upgrade anyway, I'd wait. You'll never recoup your investment in the SS so you'll take a hit unloading for 'maybe' 1 year of use? Save the $ and put it towards a new '16 SS or something.

This.
There will be small road rash issues on the front end at 72k miles, otherwise it's likely this was someone's daily driver and saw some significant highway miles. Those are some of nthe 'best' miles you can put on a car, assuming it's not creeping along in LA traffic (technically "highway" miles but mind as well be city driving, or worse). I agree that buying a Gen5 right now isn't the best idea, but a deal is a deal. This IMO (assuming everything checks out) is a good deal. |

That is in ROUGH condition. Which mine is not, the NADA for my car in current condition is $28,225.

72k miles is nothing for any modern car. I easily expect any modern engine to go 250k miles. Looks at all the BMWs and other more valuable cars when new. There's a ton of old 3 series running around with well over 200k miles on the original motor.
An automatic transmission might be needed somewhere between 150-200k but I would easily expect one to last to 150k at least if regular maintenance is done. So to me, 72k miles is not a lot of miles, 150k would be a lot of miles. The way those miles got put on and how the car was treated and maintained matter more more than just how many miles it has.

That's ONLY 18k miles a year and it's below average miles for a 4 year old car. My Camaro has 76k miles and it's a 2011.
