I think the deck lid is made of aluminum. Maybe I'm wrong? It seemed to look like aluminum when I took my spoiler off. If so, rust isn't that much of a concern. Regardless, this will continue to be an issue, even if GM repaints the lid. I plan to check mine once a year and repaint if needed.

Thanks for the info. When I removed my original spoiler, there were two places where the paint was totally gone. It had actually flaked off on one side. I drive in the winter and the car has been covered in salt spray, yet there was no evidence of any rust at all. Not even a speck. That's why I suspected it was aluminum. The new spoiler completely covers the repainted area, so now I'm going to just add it to yearly maintenance. Only takes about two minutes to remove the spoiler. I even used foam cushion when I installed the new spoiler. When I pulled it off, I could see where the problem is still happening. Fifteen years from now, some aftermarket company will make a killing selling replacement deck lids. There will be a lot of rusted out ones on the road.

Remove spoiler, find damage.....have shop repaint trunk lid and put spoiler back on car then expect different results from doing the same thing?
![]() Does not work that way. Before putting a spoiler back onto the car, you have to protect the space between the spoiler and the body with a product designed to do so. Even GM recognizes this and ships 3M tape for their high wing. Why they don't spend a few dollars at the factory new, is a question only they can answer. Anyone with a wing should immediately remove it and reinstall using a product similar to 3M™ Pressure Foam Tape If you have paint damage, repair it before re-installation and or attempt to charge GM for your valid concerns. |

I seriously doubt you can convince GM that they should repaint a section of the car that can only be seen by disassembling it.

The TSB doesn't cover the newer years... best of luck. Personally, I think it's silly to remove a body component and be surprised that it damaged the paint.

I think the dealers point of view is.....you took it off, how do we know you didn't damage it?

Like almost everyone else is saying: dont be "that guy"... if and when something does need to be done, the dealer will be more apt to assist you if you arent what some people refer to as a 'squeaky wheel'...

Well gee the slight scuffing of the paint is expected from body flex and the rubber strips under the stock spoiler, just be glad you did not have to drill holes and run a line to power and then fill other holes to switch spoiler..........
