I use moth balls in a container in the garage. Looks like you got luck though. I saw one member on here where they had taken the car out of winter storage and the mice chewed up the cloth on the firewall for a nest.

Peppermint oil is the ONLY thing that keeps the mice out of my outside generator. Just wear nitrile gloves and use sparingly. A little goes a long way.

If it is rats, then get some good ol' fashioned rat traps ( the mean kind...the kind with the spring loaded bail.) and get some bacon. Cut about a 1"x1" piece or two of bacon and put it on the pad. Now the important part...tie the bacon onto the pad with some thread so the SOB has to tug at the bait. I usually go once around the bacon and pad twice around the length and twice around the width and then tie it off. I then rub some bacon on the wood base so it gets some grease on it and smells oh so enticing to the SOB.
Place the traps anywhere they have been , as evidenced by their messes, and ESPECIALLY along any walls.

You won't have to wait very long, I promise you. I would check the traps once a day, you don't want one stinkin' up the joint if you did not realize that you got him. After you get the first SOB, leave the traps out for any friends of his so they can join him.

You can usually pick up the carcass by picking up the trap itself and throw away the whole shootin' match.
If you are a particularly mean cuss, then you can even find something to shim the end of the bail's coil spring away from the wood so that the bail snaps with even more power!!! Did I mention that I HATE rats?

Make sure and check in the bottom of your airbox (under the filter) too.

I had a good sized nest there.

I solved my rodent problems by calling a professional exterminator.

I only have problems with squirrels and gophers here, but since the neighborhood expanded it's been less of a problem. They never got into the car, just the fruit trees.

Had a very similar problem just a few months ago, and I drive the car everyday!

It was so nice of them to start making a nest out of my engine cover that I left a present for them under my car! Started putting a poison trap (one that dogs can't get into since I park outside in a neighborhood) under the front left tire and never saw evidence of them again.

I use mothballs on my boat every year to prevent this. You can just leave a few under the car on the ground. They work great without adding anything.

Hey hey woah..I used to have a pet rat. I loved her, it was like owning a mini dog. So I could never suggest killing rats
