Don't laugh too hard, you might hurt yourself.

Rharon, I had it painted at a shop. They did prime before painting.

I like that, very nice! Now how about an LS3 or L99 badge to replace that usless V8 tag on the front of the engine cover? I don't know what they were thinking when they did that. I have also heard the comment that the cover should have read "CAMARO" where you made the mod and not "CHEVROLET". I agree.

Thanks

Yes, the last touch will be the V8 or something to cover it. Only things I have found, short of vinyl decal, are $60 for polished stainless. A little too rich for this DIY project.

It's not hard, but I was lucky enough to have someone take it off for me. It only took him about 5 minutes tops. He had to remove several bolts (some hold the fuel rails down and some hold the intake shield down). Then you have to lift the fuel rails just high enough (a few inches) to slide the intake shield off. Then pop the fuel rails back in place and tighten them back down.

Inspired effort worth it...

Hey Chris,

Again, thanks for the inspiration to tackle this mod. Here are the finished results. As I said in my pm to you, there are a couple of people interested in this for their cars... We'll see... Would love to do it with/for some friends for fun, but don't want to start a business...That takes all the fun out of it...Notice in the first and third pic, Pink Pig is checking the cover out through the windshield... He approved...

I used Dupli color paint from Autozone and several people asked me how I matched it. Well, it's "Dupli-color' so the cap has a sticker with the color on it, and the cap matches the paint color, but they didn't have Red Jewel Tint, so I did it the scientific method. I got six or seven different colors that were real close, asked the lady working the cash register if it was ok, and carried them out to my car. It was parked in the sun. I got my window cleaner out of my trunk, and (this is important) a micro-fiber cloth, yellow in color. I sprayed the paint can lids with window cleaner and carefully wiped the caps off (without damaging the cap stickers, I may not buy that can so others coming along behind me may want to be able to read the stickers)(They may not have scientific skills like me) and held it up to the front valance and then a side body panel of the car. Uhm... nope, nope, ohhh close but nope, nope... ahhhh, thats it, perfect... My focus capacity in my eyes is gone, but my color match ability is still good... I bought one can and took it home, got one of the pieces of the cover that I had already cut out, sanded it and then sprayed it for color. Wet sanded it, then sprayed it with clear... wet sanded that, and then buffed it out and pulled my Camaro back out in the sun, if it's a good color match, then I gotta go back to the Auto Zone anyway, and sure enough it is a perfect match... so, three cans of paint and two cans of clear later... taa daa....

Now to any others wanting to try this... Take your time, I probably have at least 20 hours in this mod. With the lessons learned on this one, I could probably cut it down by 1/3rd or maybe even 1/2... but it's not a quick process...but the end result is awesome...If anyone has any questions, PM me and I'll help where I can...

One of the guys from my local club that does under hood plates is going to use his cover to measure the size needed for a aluminum cover/insert to go over the v-8 insignia. I am going to have something like
This Camaro Custom Built for Robert & Debbie
or
Robert's
SS/RS
or something like that... I'll post that when I get it done...

Thanks Again Chris,

Robert

SSE 4 2SS, very nice work!

That is about as close as possible a color match, without the exact name!

For others doing this mod, I got the chrome button head screws from this outfit out of Phoenix. Great people to work with and you WILL NOT beat their prices and shipping!!!

I used 10 1/4-20 x 1/2" down both sides on the center & 15 #10 x 1/2" on the side squares

Here is an cover update with the chrome SS covering the V8. Just the rear trunk white SS emblem with the decal removed.

Here is my mod.

I took it to a light-er level. Blue accent lighting. Still inwork. Will install switch so when hood is raised lights will come on.
