The 4l80 would be nice but still have to factor in a lot of other components on top of the $2800 trans.

Looking like it's between a stock 6l90 out if salvaged truck or built 6l80. Large price difference between the two $750 vs $3200. Most likely try to get the 6l90 down a bit since I'll need new drive shaft and few other pieces.

Very true! It adds up quick! Even with selling my TR6060, Mantic Clutch and DSS driveshaft, I am still several thousand dollars into the swap.

There's also a company that sells completely rebuilt 6L90's for $2k. It doesn't say specifically what vehicle they came out of but they do have a list of compatible vehicles and the ZL1 is listed there specifically. They have a $1k core charge but you can pick one up from a local junkyard or pick n pull for $150 out of a truck and turn that in as your core. Then turn around and sell you 6L80 for whatever you can and offset the cost. Here's the link:

http://www.smartpartsauto.com/6l90-transmission.html

I personally wouldn't put a dime into that 6L80 as i've had numerous people and numerous shops tell me that they don't last around that power range. My car serves about the same purpose yours does, it's not my daily, it gets driven on the weekends when it's nice out and the occasional freaky friday at the track. But I will heed the warning of people and shops that have had 750~800whp Camaros with "built" 6L80's that didn't work out very well and go with something else without breaking the piggy bank.

Hope this helped somewhat and keep us updated on your plans.

Thanks for heads up. Confirms others opinions when talking to them about a built 6l80. At least one of the major tran shops told me and my old shop that they won't even touch 6l80s anymore.

I actually talked to the guys with the $2k 6l90s but I will probbaly get ahold of them again once I get my core.

Yeah I try not to push someone into what they should or shouldn't do, my belief is its ultimately your car, your money, and your plan. But I will try to put the information out there and let you decide for yourself. I had a large, well respected company on this site as well as the shop that has done every bit of my work and does nothing but LS builds tell me, don't put a dime into your 6L80 with convincing evidence as to why. So I made my decision.

As for the company in the link I posted above, I dug a little deeper into them specifically and they seem to be pretty legit with great reviews, one of which was actually a guy with a ZL1 who got a replacement 6L90 from them. They also have a warranty, members of the BBB and set up shop for SEMA and whatnot as well.

Either way you go, let us know, I'm pretty interested to see what you decide and how it goes.

Seems like I've read somewhere the truck version of the 6L90 won't work.

My question is (and I've looked but haven't really found the answer) what exactly is the difference between the 80 vs the 90? The aftermarket rebuild kits look to be the exact same.

I think that it has to do with the truck being a 4x4 or not for if it will work. Ive got one lined up but still waiting to do additional research on it. Once I have everything I need and a shop lined up Ill post a new thread with details

6L80E and 6L90E have some different parts as I recall. Some of the 90's parts are bigger and beefier.

The truck trans I would think the input shaft would bolt up to our engines. Keep researching Flyer!

I actually sent those guys an email asking them in a roundabout way what, if any are the differences between the ZL1 and truck 90's. Basically told them I was looking for one for my ZL1 and I see they have all 6L90's listed together as the same item regardless of what it's going in. So we'll see what they say. As for the differences between the 6L80 and 90, the 90 has two extra pinion gears for a total of six, wider output gears, and it has one more clutch plate per clutch than the 80 if I'm not mistaken. And it's almost an inch and half longer.

It is longer. I have a shop lined up that I think were going to go with it. Still need to talk to DSS about a driveshaft as well as a local company who makes race driveshafts due to length.

Once I stop by the shop this weekend should have better idea when will happen but be after the holidays due to schedules.
