Just watch out when you say oil is oil.

I read an article done by Cambridge university (I think) They tested Mobil 1 against an 'average' priced oil and the cheapest supermarket brand (all oils were the same oil spec)
From 0-2000 miles the lubrication/viscosity of all the oils were nearly identical and all degraded at about the same rate. From 2000-10000 were where the results really changed, Mobil 1 pretty much stayed the same and the other two slowly dropped off through the test, with the cheapest supermarket brand dropping the most! The tester did comment that although the cheapest brand had dropped the most, it still wasn't critical to lubrication/protection.
I will see if I can find the website, it was quite interesting!!
From what I could gather, if you had a car that you just used as a run around, then cheap stuff would be just fine as long as you didn't leave it too long between changes!

Not the site I was looking for but very interesting

I changed mine at approx. 2000 miles and put the car away for the winter. I used Valvoline Syntec, they claim it's better then mobil 1 on their website, plus it's cheaper. I run synthetic in 3 cars and 1 truck. Mobil 1 got to expensive.

That's why i always believed that if you change the oil every 3,000 miles use the cheapest grade of oil you can buy.

Does anyone know if they run these engines at the factory at all? Seems to me that anything I've heard or read was that the fist 20mins or so required an oil high in zinc, phosphorous and other minerals for initial break in after that you could switch to whatever synthetic necessary. The engineers are no dummies, I'd have to believe if the car comes with Mobil1 that's just dandy for break in and every day use.

the V6 camaro comes with conventional oil from the factory, the v8 comes with M1 from the factory.

Royal Purple is one hell of an oil, mobil 1 is a great oil as well, as is Amsoil. I run RP in everything but my wife's Jetta soley because its still under warranty and free oil changes for 3 years using their brand.

the other thing people need to be aware of is not just the oil that they are using, but the oil FILTER as well. you can use the best oil out there (RP or Redline IMHO) and use a crappy filter (ie Fram) and not be completely protected.

I personally recommend a Wix filter, or a Napa Gold, or Purolator PureOne filter.

M1, K&N, and RP filters are great, but they are pricey compared to the previous 3.

I have 3000 miles on my car. I'm picking up an AC Delco filter today and bringing it where I bring all of my cars to get the oil changed. They use Mobile 1.

So I guess thats what she's getting.

Wow! An oil that makes your car run quieter??? Are you serious? How does it compare to Mobil 1? The only concession I'd have made for my Camaro was I was going to use synthetic every time, but I didn;t care which brand. I tend to swing towards penzoil a lot because there's a jiffy lube near me that uses it.

I put non-synthetic in at the 65 mile mark, changed it again at the 600 mile mark, and I just put Royal Purple in everything at the 1,700 mile mark.
HUH?!

Wow. I plan to just leave the factory oil in until the car manual says to change it! What's the cycle on a camaro? On my Honda CRV, its every 6 months or 6,000 miles. I use Mobil 1 extended performance, supposedly good up to 15,000 miles, but I go by the car's oil life indicator.

Anyway, what's the oil cycle for the Camaro? Every 3,000 miles / 3 months?

most people have been changing their oil around the 1500 mile mark the first time around. after that, whenever the car tells you to

Oil cycle varies greatly by how the car is driven. According to the manual, it can be up to 12,000 miles or a year - no more than 1 year though. If you want to follow that...

What benefits does this offer?

Also does the Camaro have an oil life indicator like my Honda does? It's awesome having the car tell you how much life is left in the oil.
