The proper way is to plug it, then patch it. The reason why is the plug will prevent moisture getting into the belts and rusting. That can cause a blowout. And the patch will seal the inside of the tire.
BTW.... the patch should be placed directly over where the plug is sticking out inside the tire. The plug is cut flush with the inside surface of the tire and then the patch goes right over that.

I agree with plug patch. But maybe you'll get lucky and it will be a dinky little thing and not have punctured the inner tube haha. I had this happen probably 3 times over this past summer. Just took it to my local Tire Discounters and had them pull it, ready to do the plug and they checked each time for leaks and to the excitement of my wallet, there were none
Surprised me though, one of those was an industrial staple and a good bit of it was in the tire. Either way, hope the least expensive route is the one you find yourself taking!

I had a nail in almost the same spot All the tire places I went to told me that it’s to close to the sidewall and it has to be plugged I went to 4 different places and they told me the same thing The place that fixed it showed me the inside of the tire and the nail was poking in at the base of the sidewall All of them told me that they didn’t think a patch would stay attached so close to the side wall

Ditto. I bet they’ll say it’s too close to the sidewalk. Liability issues pushes it into the shop saying replace.

super glue the head of the nail and drive it for a year keeping an eye on your pressures. or pull it out and hope it is a shorty.

The 'too close to the sidewall' bit is what I don't need. Firestone, and these big chain shops, may push for that more often than not. And looking at this... on a nail this close to the sidewall, the more I think about it - I better go elsewhere...
I'll take it to the small shop down the street instead in the morning. They installed my new tire when the shop before that botched the installation and the air leaked, and I got a flat and ruined the tire. They seemed like a good bunch of guys. Now because of this I risk a shop scratching my rims, smh... they're a little dirty right now, but there are no dents or scratches on my rims. That's a lighting illusion on the first pic due to the machined finish on the face of the spokes... |

plug patches work great. You can go to a dealer to get one put in. I think they only charged me like $15

Plug patch combos aka quill seal will do you fine, looks to be in the tread and not in the sidewall of the tire to me

Long as the tire tech is smart enough to drill out the hole towards the center of thread and not towards the sidewall and break a cord in the sidewall that would cause a sidewall bulge from broken cord

Let’s hope that it didn’t puncture. Otherwise, personally, for the type of driving I do in the canyons, a lot of the same ones you do, I would not go cheap, and replace the tire. If you buy one, you could use the new/used one as a spare when you replace all four. Although, in your case I don’t think it’s a big deal because you don’t run a square setup. Tires and your safety are too important. Good luck and keep us posted.

This^. Plug patch will work fine, question is, will you find a shop to do it. They are generally very liability driven when repairing tires. If you're not losing any pressure, there's a chance it's short enough that it didn't puncture the tire completely.
