I'd buy a 4.5L D-Max Camaro in a heart beat!!! It's funny but we were actually talking about this exact thing!!

The torque would be unreal and you'd get awesome gas mileage. With an intake, exhaust and a tune you'd be pushing 600+ ft/lbs at the wheels!!! It would be awesome! My 2500HD 6.6L got 22 MPG and made 760 ft/lbs at the wheels. It was fun beating up on Mustang's in a 7000 lbs truck!

It was actually rated at 320 HP and 520 ft/lbs. It is my understanding the shelved the program.

It's called a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) system and it's a joke. A lot of manufactures are still trying to figure these systems out. I could write a novel on the system but it'd be too much!

I must admit, reading the OP I was a bit skeptical as to the accuracy of the performance and MPG numbers.... but if those are even close, then WOW. Guess the only thing that would hold me back would be that diesel engine noise: if its loud forget it, I don't want it to sound like a tractor comin down the road. I know they can make them quieter, but how much so? (really, has anyone heard a quieter diesel car?? how bad/good was it?) Haven't really seen a lot of diesel cars so

Current Diesel emissions requirements or at least those for 2010 are ridiculous.

Do do it afermarket as you own mod...............no problem.

But for passenger cars you are required to have Diesel Particulate Traps that must burn off the hard particles periodically and the newest requirements for NOx requiires Urea Injection which is very complicated. In fact if the urea tank runs dry, the emissions will prohibit your car from running.

It works in trucks because of the fuel economy improvement in a work/tow vehicle. But for a passenger car the costs get really prohibitive.

Not disputing the 38 mpg claim, but diesels in in mid/full size cars in Europe are pulling those numbers and not jacked to 800 HP.

But for comparison, the BMW 5 Series, slightly heavier than the Camaro has a 3.5 Liter Diesel available.

286 HP
427 lb ft torque
35 MPG Combined
0 - 60 6.7 Seconds

So a bit slower than a V6 Camaro with a 6 MPG increase at a premium cost of several thousand dollars......................not counting urea.

The new D-Max engine's are quite. Over in Europe most vehicles are diesel and in all honesty I think manufactures here should have followed their example. The Hybrids you see on the market are a joke!! When you drive them hard they get worse mileage than a vehicle with twice the power... Where are the batteries going to go when they're dead? Landfill??

Gah probably has such a minimal effect on emissions too that it would of been better to invest in making the engines run more effeciently instead of putting some HP robbing craziness in the Exhaust.

Not to mention the acidic process (Sulfer mining anyone?) used to create them. The truth is a Hummer is probably more ethically made then a Prius. One study even suggested that no matter how much fuel it saved it could not make up the damage caused by the batteries mere creation...

Sometime that battery is going to go out. These aren't triple A durcels were talkin here folks lol.

The new trucks actually get worse mileage than the LBZ D-Max 06-07.5 (Pre DPF)... It's a joke....

Look at it this way... the smell would keep most would-be vandals away.
