I'm glad that we have the choice now. I will have to check both out. Mean while price is my biggest factor when choosing which Camaro I want but then I do want to save on gas. Goes back to the hybrid discussion. It will take you the life of the car to get what you saved in gas to what you saved spent in the hybrid version.
The first car a bought was a rx-8 stick, used. Manuals with this car are pricier 'cause of the extra power you get in the stick version. But the autos are tipically more expensive in pretty much every other car you buy. This will be the case again. With what I save in gas, I will pay in auto tranny. With what I save in auto tranny, I will spend it gas. So, for me, it will be strickly price, performance and feel. That may change as it will be a year before I buy one and I will have more money by then. I want a stick but I like to see what a paddle shifting muscle car feels like first.

Is that the name for it, and people just use AFM for a nick name, I was puzzled when I was reading an Impala Manual

I understand where you're coming from. When GM first released all the specs I was a bit upset to see that those interested in the manuals couldn't get AFM (although I understand it wouldn't work).
However, once you've mastered the stick you should be able to get the same fuel savings as the auto L99. It should also be a bit cheaper because, if I remember all the literature correctly, the automatic is still considered an "option" that would up the price a bit. And frankly I don't see paddle-shifters equaling the fun of a true automatic. In short the auto L99 will cost you a bit more up front probably, won't save you that much more fuel, and will limit the amount of fun you can have with a V8. It would be more convenient in traffic though...

Displacement on Demand is the old name, GM changed it to Active Fuel Management. I think it sounds better than the other two, and there would probably be less aversion to DOD than AFM for the Camaro, at least on this site.

Is there something in the lifters that makes them have problems with high lift cams, or maybe the system that distributes/controls the oil for the lifters is not compatible with a more radical lobe design.
I think the cam is the main difference between the two motors and that is where your 22 HP comes from. If the lifters in the L99 are limited (or heavier) from the factory than the LS3 is for me. |

well, apparently it doesnt for most people on here.
they keep pissing and moaning about "oh, i want 734927hp and it only cost $15,000.00 and gets 5000mpg" but im mainly ranting on the 9000 members that joined in the last couple weeks or so just blabbing about everything that we've already discussed about the car without searching. it takes me about half an hour just to filter thru all the stupid posts till i find a post worthy of reading...like yours for instance. lol

you can mod the afm (L99) engine, it is not any diff than the LS3, sure the cam's lobs are a little diff and so are 8 of the lifters, but other than the vcm's tuning, it is just like any other hotrod engine. I've seen afm engines in the W body cars make over 550Hp and a few licked the 600Hp mark while still sipping on the high test fuel. all in all, the stick is only for if you want to have fun driving around. but in the end, all things being equal, if I have a bad to the bone car making 600 or more hp, I must have the auto for fear of missing a shift, and also, NOBODY shifts faster than an automatic trans.

Is the Camaro to have no lift shift on the manual?
