They'll say alot, like "he's chosen to follow a new path in his life" or some such, but it probably comes down to money. My guess is that he pushed for more compensation following the huge success the Camaro has been and GM told him to take it or leave it, and he chose to leave.

There usually is. Its called a No Compete clause. However In a way Really good designers are not subjected to clauses like that. If you are really good at your job then you get a contract on your terms.
Its the employeer's job to retain an employee.
Highly specialized occupation's like Car Design where there are only a handful of company I guess you cant have any brand Loyalty.
Me Seung worked at Porsche / Pininfirina earlier. If we have "Dont take design cues" contracts then the Camaro probably wont have looked as good or as edgy as it does right now.
