I really don't want to have to tear my new car apart to get an option on it that I want.

I had a corvette without a hud and wanted to add one. After a lot of research, here is how it ended up:
1st. The dealers had no information on how to do it, and none of the ~10 I called would do it.
2nd. There were a couple guys on the corvette forum who would install it, but only a couple knew how. Some people had a lot of luck, some didn't.
3rd. Although you did not HAVE to buy the coated windshield, some pictures I saw of the HUD with the special windshield and ones without proved that although you can get away with not buying the special windshield, it was much better if you did.

GM knows its important. I's not being held up because of lack of interest on their behalf.

Okay. That didn't really tell me what the holdup was, so I am left feeling as empty as I did before I read it.

I don't know why people are withholding imformation at this point.

They aren't withholding information they have said it will be availible in Dec 09. My guess is that one of the suppliers in the HUD supply chain cannot get production up to pace before then. Of course GM will not hold back production for this one option. It is a bit frustrating for me because I will have to wait but oh well. I plan on ordering my car so as soon as it is availible I will be all over it.

I'm told we'll get it in the UK car (I have no idea where this information comes from) but we have to wait until May 2010 anyways so I guess it's not so bad. I'm not entirely sure I'd care to be honest - unless it's that good!

I work in a production environment (Aircraft) and I can see it being an "out of house" problem more so than a GM issue. Sometimes i'll install wiring\avionics in an aircraft that is missing essential vendor supplied sheet metal. We told the customer we'd have unit 119 in the delivery center by 8\23, do we stop production on that unit?...nope we move it as scheduled and do it on down the line.

It does seem like HUD was almost an afterthought, if they would have told the vendor on 8\10 when they announced production is "a go" they'd have a surplus of HUD units now.[I'm waiting for a 2011

The original poster was implying there was an explanation for the delay as a factual matter but not explaining what the fact was. This is not helpful as it is saying you know something but won't prove what you know when asked.

My contention is that if there's a logical reason for the delay then TELL ME. If the reason is good enough then people will understand and it will avoid a lot of folks thinking they dropped the ball.

There is not a sperate dash piece. It doesn't make sense to have one given how easy it is to cut and cover with a piece of trim.
They just have a trim piece that covers the rough edges of the hole. On the GP's it runs from the defroster vents (attaches there to the clips) and then there are 3 clips at the HUD unit itself.
Thats the way it is on all GP's and the vett. I have installed 3 HUDs in cars for people. It's very very simple. Takes a little care and time with a dremmel. The 04+ GP has a different console for the HUD cars but all other cars I have delt with just have a manufacturers blank that you remove to install the controls. Some are lug and play (meaning the harness is already there) some require a couple of wire taps.
As for the winshield. It's hit and miss. They roll off the same assembly line with the HUD ones pasing a clarity test. They only test what they need so some non HUD rated windshields are just as clear.
As for the dealer not knowing. This is not a dealer installed option and never has been. If GM doesn't write a tech paper on something the dealer will not know a thing about doing it. It will be as simple as using the service manual and comparing the prints of the non HUD to the HUD equipped cars and getting the wire numbers to tap.

The biggest problem with all of this is cost. New HUD units are evry expensive. All of the units I have installed were from wrecks.

without saying anything new - GM doesn't choose to delay a feature such as HUD... It does so when it is forced to do so - I'm sure you wouldbt have wanted them to delay the Camaro until 2011 so that it would debut with HUD

True....it could be that one of the suppliers can't be ready in time. GM doesn't make all the parts for thier cars, they come from other suppliers.Thats why they are called "Assembly Plants"

Working by myself in my spare time without any working samples of a HUD in my parts bin already developed, I could single-handedly design and code the printed circuits for a HUD like the one mentioned earlier in the thread and do it before February.

A company with a lot of resources that already HAS several working designs should be able to do it a LOT faster than a tinkerer like me.

I don't buy the delay.

I hadn't really given HUD much thought till reading this thread... and then I got to thinking, it could be useful, being as I have gotten used to something similar in my current car.

I know it isn't a true 'HUD" but I am used to looking much further forward for the speedo now... so HUD might be a necessity now!

Any prices on the HUD option?
