This is where many people are tapping into to add footwell lighting and most of the time are using scotch locks. That grey wire as I recall was a fairly small gauge. If you are not the original owner that's probably what you are encountering, someone else's installation. Scotch locks are handy at times but are famous for severing the wire you are tapping into.

An extremely likely explanation. I've seen a few other wires down there that had scotch locks fitted. Also, I find there are quite a few screws and clips missing as I rummage around behind the dash and in the trunk. Sloppy craftsmanship by a former owner, I suppose.
