I cannot agree more with the other Northerners here... I've done both Rally and single seater Formula cars so I can probably drive, but if you have little to no grip you're lost anyway as soon as something unexpected happens. A child jumping out in the street, a deer, a car in front of you unexpectedly braking... Just not worth the risks. Even the best snow tires won't help most of the drivers here in the South though, but at least it helps me to avoid all those wrecked cars!

Yeah, but if he finds himself in a situation where his driving skills are not the problem, then he may have a big problem. Meaning, if you need to avoid something that is occurring that is completely out of your control you may not be able to avoid a crash with summer tires. Just a thought.

I'd pony up for some all-seaons. I got stuck on a level street with an inch of packed snow on it in my 20" summers. Didn't even feel like the wheels were on it. Once I got on my all-seasons it drives through snow with little issue (if you use your head!!).

Yup. I don't even know how you would move a foot on summer tires (literally). I couldn't do it in any of my cars.

Summer only tires are super duper above 45 degrees however they turn to stone below freezing and driving in freezing temps will damage your summer only Pirellis. Northern US/Canada/European winters are a big gamble on summer only tires. I have Yokohama Parada Spec-X on my daughter's RS and just bought General Tire G-Max for my SS. Both are all season and snow rated. The Yokos did amazing last winter in St. Louis. Toyo Proxie4 would be another all season, snow rated tire to consider. Choices are limited in the 275/40/20 and 245/45/20 sizes. Good luck this winter to us all.
