Yes, there is a way to bypass the clutch depression on a manual to have it start remotely. There was someone here on C5 (who was from Canada) saying that they were going to have to have this done very soon as they've had it done previously on other cars.

1LT does with the c&c package and 2LT and 2SS have it standard. But what about the LS, 1LT (no c&c) and 1SS people? I know a lot of the 1SS owners would get this.

It's not just remote start. It is a secondary key fob with an LCD screen that shows the vehicles current status (locked or remote-start engaged, for instance) and critical vehicle data, including tire air pressure, fuel level, odometer and theft alarm status. This fob offers greater operating range then the factory keyless entry system, and can control a second, ARSS-equipped vehicle.

You are not simply getting remote start and one of the current Camaro key fobs that has the remote start button.

Also this thing is HUGE! 1.5 - 2 times the current Camaro key fob. I've seen cell phones smaller then this.

Yes.

I originally was going to get this until I got a little bit more info and found this out. Between that and finding out how big it is, I decided against it. With the Viper alarm system, I would be carrying around 3 key fobs, no thanks.

It can be done, I have a buddy that used to install remote starts on manuals. He had to put some sort of clip for the neutral sensor. The driver would have to make sure the shifter was in that clip before the remote start would work. I'm sure there are plenty of shops that will install this. But be careful, I have seen someone remote start a manual in gear...it wasn't pretty.

Just to answer the MT + Remote start questions, its not illegal, Clifford alarm systems actually used to sell a manual transmission remote start (they are owned by DEI now). That worked by bypassing the clutch switch and also installing a neutral safety switch, as well as another switch you had to arm before getting out of the car so the remote start will work. If you didn't arm that 3rd switch then even if you left the car in neutral it wouldn't remote start, I guess it would make a good reminder.

At the shop I used to work in the first one they ever installed was into a 94 Mustang GT. I guess either those switches malfunctioned or the guy who put them in screwed up because the very next day the owner managed to remote start his car through his garage door and into his neighbors garage across the street. The entire chain of stores immediately stopped carrying it.

I believe DEI still offers some sort of variation on this system but there are a lot of shops out there that won't install them because they don't want to be associated with someone doing something stupid like that (and duh the safety switches are easy enough to bypass if you know how).

Indeed.

I talked to my local service guy and he confirmed that "it might have been already done to a manual car" recently.

You would have to (allegedly) bypass the nuetral safety switch and I'm sure nobody would install it "on the books" at a dealer.

But he did say that "somebody" did it and reprogrammed the fob to where the customer pressed the lock button twice to start the car.

All of this of course was "off the record" he told me.

So yes, I plan on it as well. When I have nothing else I'm saving for.

A place called JD's Car Stereo in Montreal's west island had remote starters for my M6 Trans Am. I have not called them to see if one exists for the Camaro but plan to this spring. All you had to do was to make sure that the car was in neutral, and the parking brake was on (of course), and that was it. It worked like a charm. It was 2 way so I could tell if it actually started or not (a beep of some kind).
