My amp is currently sitting on the floor of the trunk & I like the location of your amp inside the trunk, under the the rear window panel speaker deck. Your photos indicate the your amp is mounted horizontally, upside down. The amp installation manual rates that as “Fair” for cooling efficiency. Installing the amp horizontally, right side up, is rated “Good” for cooling efficiency. You may want to question the installer as to his/her reason for installing the amp in a less desirable position for heat dissipation. Perhaps he/she liked being able to view the three indicator lights on the top of the amp by having them face down towards the floor of the trunk, rather than up where they would be difficult or impossible to see, since they would be very close the rear window speaker panel. Excessive heat build-up can lead to degraded performance of the amp, according to J.L. Audio. My preference will be to install the amp in the same location as yours but with the amp right side up & with the controls/switches/wiring side of the amp facing towards the back of the vehicle so I have direct access to that side of the amp and can view it from the rear of the vehicle. Your installer opted to install the controls/switches/wiring side of the amp facing forward, possibly to better hide the wiring from view & to shorten the wiring runs.
I would think aesthetics would have most to do with the mounting position of the amp. The topside of the amp is much more visually appealing with the logo and lights then the underside is. I would also think airflow would not suffer too much as there is a gap on the bottom side of this amp, and it isn't mounted directly against another surface, and most likely JL is refering to that type of install when it rates its airflow. As for the amp wires and controls facing the cabin of the vehicle it is purely for aesthetics no one wants to open the trunk of they're beautiful car, and see a bunch of wires hanging there. If you consider mounting the amp this way, I highly suggest you have your system fully dialed in before you permanently mount that thing.
