This is very interesting. These images definitely give us a good insight into what the L99 guys could do without. GM did a great job making these V8s powerful and sounding good. With a little work, these can sound more aggressive and really reduce the restriction.

The L99 mufflers have this crazy piping on the inside to help reduce AFM noises.

If you follow the piping, you'll notice that the L99 muffler is a straight thru muffler as well. It just has that J pipe on it. That's GM's version of a Helmholtz tube. It works VERY well as you never hear a L99 owner, with the OEM mufflers, complain about drone.

Very well done, glad I am seriously looking at my options for removal.

Verrrrrrry interesting!
It seems that the small tube opening in the bottom of the resonator turns the back chamber into a Helmholtz resonator for both pipes, and the high-heat area appears to be a crude x- or h- chamber. Can't accuse Exhaust Engineering Dept. of not trying something different.
I still think that Edelbrock piece is better.

So what do you need to replace this resonator? A X-Pipe? Who make them?

There are several options. The X pipe is the most common and is what I have. I have just the X pipe section and had my muffler guy cut and weld it in with the extra pipe. There's complete replacement X pipe setups, as well a resonated X pipes. I'm sure someone makes a H pipe but I haven't seen one advertised. Depending on which way you go, you're looking at $150+ for the swap.

How can this be healthy for the car? I am purchasing Kooks LTs and was just going leave the mid piping alone for now, but I don't know if I can justify buying LTs and being that restricted at the mid pipe....good Lord.

The LS3 doesnt have that kind of resonator. It has two small bullets, which are just straight-through pipes with packing in the sides.

I'd love to get rid of my resonator /boat anchor but I dont want the car louder or more 'drone' sounding than it already is.
