Each state has a base State sales tax. Then each county can add to it and then each City can also add to it. In texas the base rate is 6.25% I believe. But in Houston the sales tax is about 8.75%. Sales tax on car sales is usually only the base amount.

For Texas, you are correct. The car sales tax is only the base state amount (6.25%). I double checked my sales contract on my wife's Expedition from last year and that's all I paid in the city of Houston. Max sales tax rate in Texas is 8.25% once you combine county and local amounts to the base state tax.

Well, I just found out I have to pay a 1.5% in county taxes as well! Even though I live in a different county!

It was AMAZINGLY fun!
They were laughing a little at me, my sales person said, "I have never seen anyone have so much fun ordering a car!" ![]() Heck, been waiting SO long, why not have fun doing it! The sales manager had wrote down 40k out the door, which includes all taxes, fees, ect. I was like, waiiiiiiiiiiit a minute....I want MSRP, and here are all of your fees, ect. I already had it all wrote out anyway, and I told him, just write on here, sign, ect. you will do MSRP on that car, and you got a deal Then, after he signed it, we figured out taxes, tags, ect. So, I pinned them ![]() After options MSRP: $36,275.00 VA sales tax: $1,088.25 County tax: $54.42 Dealer fee: $299.00 Dealer fee x 3% (VA sales tax onto the dealer fee?) $8.97 Title: $10.00 Tag: $38.75 Temp. Tag: $2.00 Should be: $37,767.42 Should work out just fine....they will NOT be gouging me. And I let them know I would be putting down a 5-6k deposit when I receive a VIN. So, I am in the order system, have an order# and am ready to rock. Oh, btw, they didn't require me to put down any deposit They were allocated 3 cars, and by Sat., the other 2 were ordered.
