I'm trying to figure out why he just told you that. Every truck company I've ever drove for paid damages - recap tires or not.

Had the same thing happen twice when I had my Sky, the first time it hit the top of the windshield frame, a couple inches more it would have come into the covertible... the second time it hit the right front and lodged in the wheelwell and under the tire causing me to do 2 360's at 70MPH before dislodging and me regaining control... only damage from that was a broken fog light.

I have stare farm also, and they would have covered it, but it wasn't enough to cover my deductable. so I fixed it myself...
Glad the OP is OK. Cars can be repaired..

First of all, I am glad YOU are ok, and I am so sorry your Camaro got damaged...I hope it will be fixed good as new as soon as possible...

Secondly, it could have been much worse, as I'm sure you have realized by now...

My son and his friend were on the New Jersey Turnpike in his friend's Firebird 2 summers ago driving to Great Adventure (an amusement park)...

Anyway, they were in the middle lane and a huge truck tire landed on the road right in front of them...my son's friend tried to swerve to avoid the tire, lost control and SLAMMED into the concrete median...the air bags deployed, and thank God no one else hit them...

Keep in mind that we live on Long Island in NY, which is about 100 miles away from where they ended up...

My son called to tell us what happened, and I felt so helpless from so far away...evidently, someone called the police and they came...she asked the boys if they needed an ambulance, and they said no....

They were two 18 yr old KIDS who were probably still in shock...so she said that a tow truck would arrive and to wait, and then she LEFT THEM sitting on the median near the left lane BY THEMSELVES for about 30 minutes until the tow truck arrived...

I wish she would have stayed with them to direct traffic away from them so they wouldn't get hit again...they were out of the car, but the car was still blocking the left lane...

I was FURIOUS, since I think they should have been automatically taken to the hospital to be checked out...my son had a big bruise on his neck from the seatbelt, and another on his chest from the air bag deploying....

Sooooo, that is my 'rant', but bottom line, the other kid's dad picked them up and brought them home and they were ok...very sore, but ok and alive...BTW, the car was totalled...

I am very sorry for your accident and again, I am very glad you are ok...

Right and wrong.

Yes, that can happen, usually form the tire being FLAT and not just underinflated, but make no mistake, 90% of the 'Road Gators' (large tread peices) you see is off of a recapped tire.

I've literally pulled out of the terminal after getting a new tire put on and got 5 miles down the road and slung half of it off.

I used to make SURE I picked up a trailer at the beggining of a summer whith all vergin rubber. In the 9 years I drove, I NEVER threw virgin rubber tread and only once did I blow a virgin rubber tire. I'm talking about 60 or 70 blowouts.

Thanks, well he was a tire dealer probably wanting to sell NEW tires and not recaps anyway... I never buy recaps for anything... I have never trusted them...

again, in theory, good advice. However, on a six lane highway at the beginning of rush hour traffic in a city with 4+ million people, slowing down that much would be just as dangerous as the tire in the road.

Hey man sorry to hear, from your photos it will be an easy fix though, just make sure that the shop doing the repairs has a life time guarantee.
The trucking company is responsible. All state laws state that anything on or in your car is your responsibility. If if flies off, comes off or is thrown off, any resulting damage is the responsibility of the trucking company.

You can minimize, but no way can you avoid all together.

I think it's illegal for passenger vehicles, including buses, to use them.

if you were in rush hour, and it was bumper to bumper to where you couldn't change lanes, then you shouldn't be going fast enough to damage your car that bad, imo.
