It's not only the L99's, my 99 Silverado did it. The lifters have no know widespread reliability issues and only tap for like a second, so why stress over it? If your looking for a perfect vehicle with no quirks you may as well get some good walking shoes.

The problem here is if you wanted to do a private sale of your car and upon start up the engine is ticking and you told the buyer that has no knowledge of this supposed normal condition that the tick is normal.I doubt that you would sale it.

The first thing I would think is that this car has been beat on and maintenance was lacking.

The point that most miss is that the private resale value of your car has been depreciated due to this(according to GM)normal condition, thus a winnable lemon law case.

Anybody know if we can just swap the lifters out with the lifters that are in the LS3's and be good?

Thunder Racing has a DOD delete kit which has LS7 lifters in it, it is pretty much an LS3 conversion without a cam and valve springs.

the only true gain you'll get is by upgrading the cam at the same time. that and the annoying dod lifter tick.

i wonder what would be more worth it. Changing the lifters to get rid of the DOD and the tick. or just getting a tune to remove DOD.

the tick will still be there after disabling DOD.

i have a tune and DOD disabled, and it still ticks, but i have to say the more miles i put on the car, the less noticable the tick is. i can barely hear it now and i have 8700 miles on the car. it ticked from day 1.

I'm sorry I have to ask. If you have Lemon Lawed 2 previous GM vehicles then why did you buy another one? Seriously why do people think they bought an 80,000 Mercedes here? It's a 35kish muscle car sheesh. It's going to have some rattles and noises.....it makes big power and is affordable.

Because it is, at least according to the powertrain engineers I've spoken with. It's simply how DOD works. Just shutting off the fuel injector doesn't work very well. You have to control the valves as well.

If I wanted to sale this car and the purchaser had no knowledge of this condition, even with only 3,000 miles on the car I do not think it would get sold, thanks GM.
Yet my original question remains, has an updated lifter been released?
Funny, because it probably ticked when you test drove the car.

Driven plenty of the automatics. I am as picky as anyone on this site. Doesn't bother me. I know why it does it.

If it ticks for just a second or so, it is operating like every L99 I've driven so far. Lifters take just a second to get up to pressure.

Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself you can enjoy a super hot car then be able to unload it at GM's expense. Let us know how that works out.

Mine ticks for a few seconds on cold starts and it is annoying but I'm willing to live with it if it doesn't cause long term damage to the parts.

There's a GM tech on the truck forums that posted this concerning the bulletin shown above.

An over agressive lifter is one that is causing the valve to not close all the way. When that happens to one of the intake valves, it overpressures the PCV system and blows oil up into the intake. When the motor goes back to 8 cylinders, it gives off a big puff of smoke as it ingests the oil that built up in the intake.
