Facilities
  • Milford Proving Ground main gate, General Motors Rd.The VDTA ("Vehicle Dynamics Test Area"), also known as "Black Lake", is a 67-acre (270,000 m2) pad of blacktop for vehicle dynamics testing. Waterfowl have been known to try to land on this "lake" of asphalt. At the ends of the VDTA are two semicircle tracks used for accelerating vehicles up to high speed before entering the pad. A controlled low-friction area made of ceramic tiles is on one side of the pad. Another area is coated with the asphalt sealant Jennite and can be watered down to produce a low friction surface.
  • The Oval Track is a 3.8 mi (6.1 km) circuit
  • The Circle Track encloses the VDTA and is a 4.5 mi(7.2 km) banked circle. It has five lanes posted with speed limits increasing towards the outermost lane. The speed limit for the outermost lane is 120 MPH (192 km/h). Due to the banking, each lane can be driven at its posted speed all the way around the circle without needing to touch the steering wheel, given proper wheel alignment and tire pressures. The track surface is extremely hard "dolomite" concrete for wear resistance.
  • The North/South Straightaway is 6.225 mi (10 km) miles in total length and includes two 2.5 mi (4 km) straightaways
  • The East/West Straightaway is 3.1 mi (5 km) miles around and includes two 1.2 mi (1.9 km) straightaways
  • "Seven Sisters" is a short course featuring seven tight curves, some level, some banked. It is one lane that can be driven in both directions, so only one car is allowed on the course at a time. This is used for testing vehicles under transient lateral acceleration loads.
  • 12 Mile Road is a straight section of pavement which duplicates the historical surface texture of a section of 12 Mile Road near Detroit.
  • The Ride and Handling loop encloses the Circle Track and has varied surfaces and turns.
  • The Vehicle Safety & Crashworthiness Lab includes a recently added rollover test facility
.

We could use the Black Lake. At the 'Lake' we could run 10 at a time.

The Milford Proving Grounds would be such an incredible location for C5Fest. From a mini Nürburgring to the black lake to facility tours it would be the most amazing location we could dream of. My posts are not directed at the hard working C5Fest TEAM. My posts are directed at the people from GM. I am hoping someone at GM will agree and find a way to move this forward. If it isn't Milford, how about the plant that builds them?

John and Scott understand our community and know how cool this would be. The challenge they face is working withing the restrictions of a large corporation to find a way to make this happen. I don't think we need to convince Scott or John. My guess is they would love it. We need to get more GM people thinking like us.

I agree with ya Pete, I would love to have it at this facility, although I grew up in Traverse City and know all too well about the Mitten's weather.

Milford, MI Weather
  • April 15th Average High - 58°F
  • April 15th Average Low - 38°F
  • Averages over 3 inches of precipitation in April.
  • Average 6 sunny days, 8 partly-sunny days in April
I am sure you remember all of the rainy St. Ignace car shows, Woodward Dream Cruises and those are in the summer months!

I dont want to discourage the Proving Grounds, just wanted to supply some facts.. I would be there Rain or Shine

Ummm... but Milford has SO MUCH more..

THAT would be a once in a lifetime opportunity...

Think of the variety of GM folks that would be socializing with C5...

I'll be attending with my car but as a spectator - will only those who are racing be permitted to participate in the car show, or is the car show a separate event to sign up for?

can't wait for April!

Not to be the stick in the mud...

But. The draw of the fest is the ability to do all things camaro, talk with vendors, Autox, Car show, Drag race, See the baddest camaros out there, speedster, LPE etc... and talk with the Camaro Team and get insight from them on what's next, and not least of all shake hands and hang out with the rest of the insane gear heads that make this site so good.

And, I'm sure there are a whole sllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew of insurance problems with having a 1000 camaro freaks being able to "drive" at Milford...

It's just not something I'm willing to concede to at this point and time...

I'm certainly not saying NO NEVER... but I don't see how it would appeal to all our Camaro addictions... Maybe I'm wrong but GM would have to make it happen... we can't run that down on our own...

So in the mean time.. we'll see.
