Norm, I've ridden bikes with ride by wire and that made me me nervous too. It's just the technology of not having a mechanical link between me and whatever I'm operating that gets me uneasy. And I am a tech nut and like high tech equipment. But not like that on a bike or a car without a failsafe. Im not any type of expert on it though on a car and don't know what they did to make it work in the event of a catastrophic failure. I am also not trying to be a chicken little and cause any type of hysteria, just throwing in my 2 cents.

Have you ever had it happen to you while driving?

I had it happen in my Cobalt while doing 75 and it was an instant lane change. Happened so fast I didnt even have time to think. The road just takes the car and the driver gets a 100% different feeling steering, it startles you as you start to think what just happened.

Thank god that Cam is safe, thats what matters most. Hopefully his next car has no issues, he seems to be being quite reasonable with the situation at hand.

There is a mechanical link between you and the wheels even with EPS. The electronic motor simply makes it easier for you to turn the wheel just like a belt driven pump does. You can still steer the car if it fails. I had a Malibu with it. I believe it may have been the first GM car to have it. It failed on my wife going down the highway. She thought the car shut off because it got very hard to steer. She didn't panic though. She just got it off the road and called the dealer. I think there is more to this story than we are hearing and I believe if the owner didn't want us to be talking about he wouldn't have posted at all. I don't blame the mods in this case for protecting themselves and C5 here.

Maybe Cam's ZL-1 was actually a Transformer, realized that it was a loser, and commited suicide with poor Cam along for the ride.

It's called damage control
It's called respect. The video has nothing to do with the EPAS as Norm Peterson stated.

I sincerely hope it was sarcasm when you suggested General Motors owns the site...

Hilarious. We go right from rumors that GTA is Tran (who owns this place) right to GM owns it.

Electronic Power Steering as stated is no more than a replacement for Hydraulic Power Steering.

It's failure mode would be the same as what would happen on your 2012 Camaro if the belt to the power steering pump failed or the pump itself failed.

It only provides assist, not steering. This is NOT steer by wire. We are a long way from that..................although it has been demonstrated.

I see this thread going way to the left and off topic. Glad that CAM ZL1 isn't seriously hurt. Some people on here never have anything positive to contribute which is sad.

I actually commented negatively on the YouTube video and reported it in an attempt to get it taken down.

WOW Glad you are ok Cam. I stalled mine backing out of the drive way once. Without the electric assist, you better be a strong mf'r to turn the wheel. Much stiffer than a conventional hydraulic system loss. That said, 7K on mine and not one problem (knock on wood) but mine sat in QC for over 2 months along with the other first produced ones. Hang in there cam, again glad you are ok.

Maybe some of us should trade for the last production Avalanche (2013) and then come back to Camaro when all the bugs are eliminated.

Just saying.

Geez lol. You could not trade me anything for my Z. I can not think of a better overall engineering masterpiece this machine is even close to its price range. ( ----- but I am biased.)

No thanks, I will keep mine.
