Diagnosis Number ONE piston

In post 336 above, you will see where I mentioned I cracked a piston in the number one cylinder. The pic below shoes the top of that piston as you are looking down the hole. You will notice there is a lateral crack all the way across thru the valve reliefs

When this happpened the piston rocked in the bore and there was some scarring just in the cylinder bore. A STOCK LT1\LT4 has 4.065 diameter pistons. When LME built this motor they used 4.070 pistons so that they could make all of the cylinder walls perfectly true by using a boring bar to enlarge the bore to 4.070.

Now the reccomended maximum bore on these engines is 4.080. So if the cylinder wall needs to be bored LARGER than 4.080 then the block is unusable. From a visual inspection, 4.080 looks like it SHOULD be fine.

A cracked piston can be cause by a couple of different things. DETONATION is ONE of them but that is highly unlikely in this case since this car is run exclusively on E85.

A second common cause of piston failure is called HYDROLOCK. This can occurr when liquid gets in the cylinder and since liquid WILL NOT compress then damage occurrs when the piston tries to push thru the liquid which basically had no path to go. This can occurr for instance if a head gasket fails allowing coolant to get in the cylinder bore. Another cause to be excessive fuel in the cylinder bore which can be caused by an injector that hangs open for some reason.

The head gasket looks fine and this engine is fully studded so head gasket failure is OUT. As far as hydrolock due to excessive fuel goes, that also appears unlikely.

SO basically I cant determine WTF happened but I will say it is HIGHLY unusual to crack a piston in an NA motor.

So I will mark this down as "SHIT HAPPENS"

Racing this car in 104 degree heat probably doesnt help things either LOL

UPDATE 8/20

Looking at the piston after removal we noticed the piston WAS NOT cracked all the way thru so it was still in one piece. The top ring DID close up at the ring gap and butted together. The damage to the cylinder wall looks to be superficial so it looks like we may be able to use another 4.070 piston with a fresh set of rings but we will confirm that next week.

Were you losing any coolant? I had an over ported intake runner spraying a very small stream of coolant into the runner, super hard to find.

NOPE no coolant loss whatsoever and the hottest the coolant ever got was around 212 degrees.

CERAKOTE time!!!

While I have the engine out getting that number one piston replaced, I decided to have my KOOKS headers and the short pipes behind the headers leading to the "X" CERAKOTED.

This should reduce the heat build up in the engine compartment considerably on track days and otherwise. I decided on a COBALT Black color which is basically a SATIN black. BRIGHTER colors like silver and gray have a tendancy to dull out anyway due to the heat cycles.

As documented in earlier posts, additional hood venting and protective heat wrap around the starter have already helped with under hood heat build up issues that showed up when I was very aggresively tracking the car in 100+ temperatures.

In the next few days, I will post up pics of the headers and short pipes PRIOR to installation since you cant really see them that well when they are installed.

The cost of to CERAKOTE the headers and short pipes is around 600 dollars and you may remember I previously had both my front and rear ZL1 calipers CERAKOTE and I was very pleased with how that held up. I have sinced replaced the FRONT calipers with an anadized AP Racing front caliper setup .

Here is some info on WHY Cerakote works well in hi temp situations:

Engine UPDATE

Well this NOW looks like it will be going back to LME for a set on 4.080 pistons. While we are at it, there have been some nice gains lately with some new cam selections. LME just made 719 HP with their 416 so we will probably use a cam VERY similar to the one used in this engine which was specifically built for road racing application in a corvette.

https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...8#post11350168

Should be able to pick up about 35-40 more HP with new bump stick.

CHROMOLY seat brackets

If you look back at my post #163 in this thread you will sell where I posted up about using Planted Technology Seat brackets with my SPARCO seat. These brackets weigh 15 pounds EACH side.

AMP is coming out with a CHROMOLY seat bracket for 6th GEN camaros that have the hardware for 6 point seat harness built in. The corvette version is shown in this instagram link below. The NEAT thing about them is that they weight 5.5 pounds so you would have a 19 pound weight savings over the planted technology brackets if you replace both seat brackets.

I think I will be the second one that gets the 6th GEN version and I will post up the install pics when done.

Well CHROMOLY will be expensive no doubt. Being that these are hand made one at a time especially. I will find out shortly. LOL

UPDATE 8/24.

Looks like pricing is going to be in the 800.00 range per pair. That seems reasonable to me considering the cost of chromoly and the one off hand built nature of the product.
