Brutal honesty here.
I've never liked the F-body. No way I'd trade a 5th Gen for one, especially a ZL1. 5th gen might be heavy, but everything else is better and easier to work on than a F-body.

Don't turn your back on 4thgen Fbodies. They are relatively lightweight, and have sturdy suspensions. Set up right with a hot lsx, and they become terrors on the street. Many more expensive, exotic and "powerful" cars have fallen prey to a properly set-up 4th gen. Mustangs still fear the ls1 4th gens!

Congrats! I’m planning on going back to a 4th Gen next summer. I know the 5th outperforms the 4th in almost ever category but there was just something about the 4th that I just like better. When I sold my 4th gen earlier this year I immediately regretted it and I gave my SS this entire summer but I’m just not feeling it like I did my old car. Frankly I’ll never use anything close to the performance the SS has and the Z28 was just a more practical and actually an easier car to drive and live with. I especially like the fact that I could actually PUT things in it like my bike and a big cooler and the IP was way easier on my older eyes.

^I'm not too sure about a 5th gen outperforming an ls1 4th gen in most categories unless you are talking about a ZL1 or 1LE or Z28. The ls1 4th gen was almost a surprise to the automotive world, as it was a relatively inexpensive car with great (but underrated) power. We all know about GM's penchant for plastics especially for interiors; Once we get past that then you can judge a 4th gen more clearly in performance. Even in stock form the 4th gen totally devastated mustangs and quite a few other pricier players in its genre at the time.
The 5th gen has better materials and fit and finish, but at the cost of increased curb weight, which hampered its performance gain. Again I say, do not take the 4th gen, especially ls1 4th gens lightly. As the owner of one I'll be the first to tell you that it will more than hold its own against the competition.

^^There is definitely a straight line difference, stock versus stock, but probably not by much. The flip side is that the 4th gen was just an easier car to drive and I seemed to be able to wring more out of it. You could read the gauges easier and you could definitely see out of it better. The only real mods on my 4th were Bilsteins and even with the live axle it seemed to handle as well as my SS. And yes, I surprised many a late model Mustang on many occasions.
As far as quality, it’s about the same, maybe worse actually. I had a 1999 and it seems they had a lot of the kinks worked out after six years in production. The plastic and leather in my 4th gen were in pretty good condition when I sold it with 100k miles while the SS seats with only 55k have cracks and splits, which I’ve seen in other 5th gens. And it goes without saying that parts are definitely cheaper for the 4th.

Tell you what though, the 4th gen may have been easier for me to drive; However the 5th Gen ZL1 was definitely more precise on the road. This may have been because Chevy worked specifically on handling for the 5th gen, whereas it may not have been such a hot priority for the 4th gen. We had a couple of super 4th gens at the end of the run, but those were aftermarket installations, and many were modding their already hot 4th gen ls1s. The 4th gens were no slouches in handling either, as I found it to be well balanced on the road.

camarodude87, I'm glad you bought the car. Sounds like your going to take care of it. Like everyone I love the color, wheels, and wish I had T-tops, with ebony interior in my 93 Z28.
