A laser shot from an LEO is going at the speed of light, or 186,000 miles per SECOND. By the time he shoots it, it has hit your car just in time for your detector to say you are busted. The other types of radar, whatever the band is, X or K or whatever, there are so many false signals around town and such, they are useless.

Be careful a lot of bases have rules against radar detectors. Check your installations guidelines.

And the laserbeam has to hit the sensor on the detector or it won't go off at all.....can't tell you how many times I hear that one from a motorist......"It never went off!!"

From a LEO's view, if you are traveling at lets say 60 mph. You are moving about 90 feet per second (more or less). The average reaction time to a severe emergency (the kind when you look up and the 18 wheeler in front of you suddenly stopped) is about 2 seconds (again more or less for the physics majors here on the board). In that two seconds after the radar detector alerted you that a signal was detected you have traveled 180 feet decelerating from 60. If you are not in heavy traffic, the radar operator has already seen you and the officer is in the process of responding, or determining if you meet the criteria for a stop.
In other words, I have found them to be a waste of money and have watched as more than one motorist pulled his off the dash and smashed it in front of me......... |

My last ticket was a doozie here in Georgia. Got the ticket plus the lovely super speeder ticket to add on top of that. Shortly after that i bought an Escort 9500ix. That will be 2 years ago next month. I rarely speed but do go over the limit from time to time. I think most people do. At least here in Georgia they do. Drive the speed limit here in Georgia and see how many people are riding up your @ss. Anyways it was worth the investment for me. I never regretted buying it. Saved me multiple times from getting any more tickets.

I don't use one with my bright red camaro, by the time I'd be notified, it already be busted. Against radar, would be helpful because it scatters and spreads.......laser, not a chance

I would agree with if a cop sees one siting on the dash your not walking away with out a ticket.... Still thinking about it, I see both sides to this that is why I still have not bought one..

I can justify a 100 dollar detector.. it may give you false readings, but who cares? That means you slow down.
I cannot justify spending upward of 1k when that usually would be the same cost as 3 or 4 tickets depending on your state (and excluding the VA guys lol)

Depends where you live. If you live in BFE or hazard county lol where the police would have radar at best, then would be a good investment, but like here where I live, too much technology.

If they shoot at you, and you are killed, for sure it's a waste of money on your part...But if you feel having one may prevent you from getting shot, I say go for it. Man, the cops must be pretty tough in your area. Good luck.

Just thought of something that happened......years ago, like 25yrs ago, wow....I had a 86 Mercury Cougar, first new car I owned.........it had a "dimming feature" for the headlights, so when you had the brights on, the dimming feature (an electric eye) would see the opposing lights coming at you and dim your lights automatically. They could be adjusted for sensitivity and all in all it worked pretty good. The electric eye was encased in a small black box a bit bigger than a pack of smokes and sat in-between the windshield and the rearview mirror. I got pulled over and one of the first things the cop states is "that fuzzbuster aint so great now is it?" I was like WTF, and that was before we had acronyms like that. He then points to the electic eye and I tell him what it is for and he was all impressed. Don't remember if he gave me a ticket, so I am thinking not. Funny what you remember...
