Now, drum brakes, I cannot stand. But I can do 'em.

The key to drum brakes if your not used to doing them is to leave one intact and undone while you do the other one, then if you have a spring or two your not sure how it goes you can use the other one to see how its loaded.

Just throwing that out for anyone doing drums for the first time. Its not hard, just a few more parts than disk.

Disk pads are so straight forward its almost embarrassing....

I'm sure the engineer who designed disk pads has been fired long since, imagine the gall of the guy not designing the thing as complicated as he could so people would have to bring it in to get changed, why he didn't even make it so you required a $900 tool that was useless for anything else......

Good catch...almost, but to be honest seems Goggle is about 14 years old....time does fly...

"But Google was officially incorporated on Sept. 7, 1998, and declared its birthday Sept. 27, 1998"

"Google.com was registered on Sept. 15, 1997"

I don't think I ever let anyone do my brakes, discs, drums, lines etc.

There were two mistakes made in this situation, one by the dealership and one by the customer: They didn't give an estimate and an estimate was not requested.

Sorry to disagree guys.

You must work for a stealership......

Sorry, but over 400 bucks is exorbitant for front brake pads when I can go over to Auto Zone and pick them up for about 30 or 40 and put them on myself.

This was for my 2006 Tundra.
Everybody refused replacing the pads without turning the rotors.
I finally after 6 years replaced my rotors for the 1st time.
I replaced my $100 lifetime warranty break pads from autozone like 7 times.

Always ask for the old parts. Also as far as brakes go tell the guy you want to go in the back and see the measurements. If no..... Later

I don't work for a dealership and if I did that doesn't automatically make me incorrect. But like I said, nobody has factored in the real cost for the dealership to replace the brakes and remain profitable, which is why a business exists.

Going to AutoZone, buying parts over the counter and installing them personally on your time is FAR different than asking a business to supply the parts, install them, pay their technician and maintain a full warranty for YOU.

You know your car on a personal level, so if you want to install $40 brake pads with confidence that's on you. But if the dealership wants to install $285 factory pads (which MSRP is set by GM, not the dealer) for liability purposes on a 426 hp car then why can't they?

The problem, as stated before, is the lack of communication. If the estimate was given or requested then nobody would be in this situation, this thread wouldn't exist and everybody would be happy.

It's just not reasonable to "hate" a company because you can do yourself it for less money. Those of us that repair our vehicles (or anything) ourselves are doing it not just for the satisfaction, but for the savings in our wallets.
