You could certainly wait and be the second owner and get a really good deal and not have basicaly 'rented' a car until you owe less than it's worth but each to his own. If it's worth it to me then it's worth it. Some people spend money on things that baffle me and I spend money on things that may baffle some. It's not like I don't still have a plan for the future. So no it's not irresponsible to ignore the lack of apreciation monetarily.
+1 That pretty much sums it up.

Man, it will be interesting to see how this car sells...after the initual euphoria has worn off. I am considering a Camaro, but not in year one. I will never, ever pay GM MSRP for any of their vehicles...but that is another subject.

With the economy in a steep decline, this is gonna be a hella of a ride. I hope everyone makes smart decisions with their money and is braced for a choppy economic ride.

I will look more closely at Camaro in the 2nd or third year of production, when MSRP won't even be a topic of discussion.

I just hope the CAFE regs don't make it a short run for a good car as far as power goes by the time I'm ready. If they do then it may be hard to find even a used Camaro 5th gen. A bit paranoid I'm sure but we'll see.

I am afraid that Obama will not be kind to us in this regard... so lets enjoy these kinds of cars while we can.

Why would a financial advisor even mention a "car" as an investment. The Camaro is an instant classic. This is the best Camaro since 69, so duh. Wake up. Its not about the money. It's about the Camaro. The new one that ROCKS. Who cares if it's not your "is the end all be all of cars to come in the future". That's not the point and you don't get it...so take a nap and get your BMW.
Hahaha, ok man. I'm paying cash for mine so depreciation won't be hitting me like it will some folks that'll quickly be upside down with this car. I'll still be liquid should something unforeseeable happen with my job or life status over all. I never said cars were an investment. Anyone with any sense knows they're not, unless you just park it in a museum somewhere and never drive it and have the pateince to wait 25 years. There are much better and quicker return on investment than autos. Buying any new car I know I'm gonna take a 25% hit (roughly). That's the fun tax I spoke of earlier, but to not even consider that fact is financially irresponsible, especially if you're financing the vehicle.

I was looking on a G8 forum the other day, and I was amazed to see a G8 GT being for sale at 24K. So I hope to see a 1SS available in one year at a price close to that.
You sir have the right idea. Look at a used Z06....those things drop in value like lead weights. If I was a Vette guy I'd be getting one, but those just aren't my personality.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Obama just got into office and has a "I'm gonna save the world" mentality right now. Let the lobbyists beat on him a while, as well as opposing party, heck even his own constituients. I don't think things will change as fast as he's expecting. At least not fast enough to affect a 2011 or even 2012 model year Camaro.

You might end up getting for 3K under msrp in a couple of years, but the msrp will have gone up another 3K.

There was a big jump in MSRP in the full size truck line up this year (between 08 and 09). All they did was make the 6 speed auto available on the 1500 series.

Not sure why the OP titled this "Why the depreciation concerns?" since there hasn't been nor does there now seem to be much concern over it. If my tally is correct, so far here we have 2-concerned and 10-don't give a rat's arse. Thread dismissed!

It's a valid question to raise, but how much of a "concern" should depend on your own financial position. If you're struggling to pay down credit card debt just to buy the car to begin with, and then you're gonna finance the whole ball of wax....well.....

Depreciation amuses me. No matter what, the car will be worth less once you buy it. And a new 370Z will drop like a new Camaro will. Might be a couple grand different but its not like a 5 year old Z will be worth $30 000 while a 5 year old Camaro will be $3000. If you want to avoid depreciation, buy something that has already depreciated.

Problem is I don't want to lose my spot in line to gain the GMS discount. PM me your thoughts.

And buy something boring like a Prius.

I'm too lazy to confirm it, but I'm sure that sporty cars depreciate faster because everyone assumes it was driven hard and fast.

As for you folks who say it doesn't matter because they will never get rid of it; never say never. I am willing and able to part with any possession I have if it means a choice between putting a roof over my family's head or food on the table. If it were to ever come to that choice, I would certainly be looking to make as much as I could on the re-sale, so that aspect most certainly matters.
Nice Ride
