Try and add more contrast and less halo-ing. You're almost there.

+1

Halos and over saturation. The 2 main signs that the person has little understanding of HDR and post processing in general. HDR is a subtle thing, intended for scenes with a dynamic range beyond that of a camera's ability to record. But what most people do is nuke any old image and think it's cool.

Dont overcook the photo. The halos will distract the quality of the photo. Here's an example of using one photo to mimick hdr to which I can say that I really like. I was to lazy to do multple exposures, I just dont see the real need for it if you dont have to.

Well, it's sort of the point of HDR. It's intended to extend the dynamic range further then you would have with one exposure. You need to shift the limited range of your camera up and down the full range of the scene to be able to encompass the information needed.

If you only take the information in one exposure, and edit it to 3 different levels, you are still only working with the information of the original image; which is limited to the dynamic range of your camera. This is usually a 5 stop range. Multiple exposures can extend that to 11-15 stops, in 5 the stop increments of your camera.

If you don't mind, I'm going to email you a picture. Would you prefer the RAW image or the jpg?

I couldn't send the RAW images. They were too big and gmail complained. So, I sent 2 jpg images. I'll look for them here if you feel like playing with them. I need to learn to do this.

Raw files are way superior over other formats, get used to working with that format and lightroom. Ive saved so many pics with that format, theres no comparison. Just fyi, incase you decide to dig deeper into photography, cheers

Now this is a great example of HDR. Very well done! See the detail of the blacktop below the car where it would normally be in shadow? And the detail of the clouds in the brightest areas without washing out.
