if the camaro is gear limited, it would hit 194 mph.

It will not be gear limited.

194 is for the manual I believe. Automatic is around 185 I think, I can't be bothered to do the calculation right now.

However, calculations I did a few months ago from a theoretical dyno run (based on LS2 and LS3 powered cars), I found the aero limit for the automatic to exceed its gear limit. The manual with less aggressive gearing could go a bit faster but did not have the power to reach its top speed. However, with a 10 mph tail wind it could theoretically reach its gear limit, though this is unlikely since top speed runs are typically done on circular tracks, minimizing the effect of wind. Similarly, a 5 mph headwind would place the auto into its aero limit before hitting its gear limit.

The 3rd car was the CTS-V. To get to that top speed they taped off a lot of the grill. I'm sure this episode can be found on YouTube. They even had to buy the SRT-8 as Chrysler wouldn't loan them one for their test/show.

Other than bragging rights, I really don't think it matters after you pass 100mph. Oregon law is now such that if you get clocked at or over 100, it's $1000 fine. It probably won't be long before they and other states make it automaticly reckless driving, which is nearly equivilent to a DUI.

If the SS tops at 150 +, mine will probably only go there rarely. Why take a chance on someone pulling in front of you or an animal jump out. These aren't NASCAR safe cars. Do you think you would survive rolling over 6 times or endo 5 or 6 times. Might get lucky and get life support.

I'm old enough to look back at what i got away with in my '68 back in the 70's. I am lucky nothing happened. Blowing the tranny @ 130 mph probably saved my life.

I'm not looking forward to reading about the people who die in their new high HP Camaros because they wanted to see or show how fast they could go. I've seen 155 mph and that's pretty damn fast on a public road. Most people will want to see how fast they can go and the public road is where it's going to happen because access to a track isn't available to everyone. I hope those people are ready for the consequences when things go bad.

100+ is reckless endangerment in many states which will automatically put you in jail. I personally bailed a friend out of jail who was busted for 198mph in a 55. He had to serve 30 days of jail time in the end and spent $10,000 in fines + lawyer fees. Since he was the sole supporter of his family he was allowed to serve time every weekend for 4 months. The judge did not feel it was fair to penalize his wife and kids...

Keep it under the triple digits unless you're on the track! I spent my fair share around the 200mph limit myself (04 GSXR 1000)...can't justify the risk vs the rush anymore. Maybe I just grew up (26 now).

caio!

Absolutely, cars are deadly enough at highway speed. They have 4x the kinetic energy going down the highway than they do in a normal crash test. The human body isn't supposed to go more than 25 mph (top speed of a world class sprinter)

Many moons ago I was caught doing 125 mph in a 25mph zone on Thanksgiving day in Lake Worth Florida (My bike).

Go directly to jail, do not pass go, I did not collect $200 but instead payed much more than that to get my butt out. Oh those yester-years when I was so damn dumb.

This was also for a 1 mile run on salt. Not a flat out unlimited top speed run. The Challenger got up to 150.2 if I recall correctly.

I was specifically playing devils advocate...
