OP my friend has the 2011 STI sedan. He only has bolt ons and a tune, ran a 12.1.
That's great, but we're not talking about a race from a dig, we're talking about a race from a roll where a high(er) trapping RWD V8 car will have a distinct advantage over a turbocharged four cylinder that's hampered by the parasitic losses of AWD at speed. Again, if you take the AWD launch out of the equation, which is effectively what we're doing here with a roll race, these cars really aren't that fast without ridiculous mods.

Bolt on 2011 will smoke a bolt on SS on the street and probably on the track.
I disagree.

Stock, they trap at 100mph. Boltons without playing with the turbo will be just be a bit better.
Pretty much. Trap speed is a much better indicator of overall performance than an ET is because you can obviously skew an ET with things like an AWD launch which is why our friend here is confused. Even a heavily modded STi will still be trapping ~105 mph, what does an SS trap typically? 110? Yeah, big difference. The SS is the much faster car at speed, even with bolt ons.

I had an 06 sti...tune, intake, dp, no cat, catback. That car is camaro fodder from a roll. From a dig, get ready to get it handed to you...if he is a good driver that is.

Newb scoob modder. Venting to atmosphere is a massive fail with the sti unless you're running a modified MAF-S setup.

The trouble with subarus is they're very finicky and you have to know what you're doing to do things right. Much of the subaru crowd just doesn't have a clue, hence all the guys running around with canned tunes, cranked up boost and blow off valves. A general rule of thumb is if someone is running a blow off valve rather than a bypass valve, they are either running a bigger turbo or just don't have a clue. That's not to say you wouldn't pull a typical bolt on sti from a roll as you would. It takes a specific type of setup to make good power on the stock turbo and it's rare to find them. Most stock turbo bolt on sti's are making about 285awhp on pump gas. That's no issue for a stock or bolt on ss to dismantle from a roll, a dig being much closer. Like I said before, the only cars you guys will have to worry about from a roll will be running meth or e85 on the stock turbo, or a bigger than stock turbo.

Stage 1 is just a tune, catback and intake maximum. Stage 2 includes a downpipe with a new tune which allows you to run considerably more boost. Stage 1 = ~15hp over stock. Stage 2 = ~60hp over stock. Totally different animals.

Mmmmmm stages.....

I love when people tell me they have "Stage 3 heads, intake, exhaust...."

From a roll you will be fine I assume, just make sure you know what RPM/MPH to start at. Be dominate with the race initiation, he will want to start in his sweet spot and you in yours. Dont start until he just goes with your pace.

Let him know the race starts ON the 3rd honk, etc.

Have fun.

The "stage" terminology is because of how prevalent Cobb is in the Subaru community. Their stage 1 tune is for intake/catback at most, no aftermarket downpipe. Stage 2 is for aftermarket downpipe+. It has become the slang way to refer to tuned/downpipe/bolt ons cars. If someone says they are stage 1 it's going to be a tune with bolt ons that don't do much. Stage 2 will always have a downpipe which typically means raised boost too. I try to stay away from using the stage titles because they can vary so much, but it's become so ingrained in the subaru community it's impossible to stop. I hate how the terms are thrown around, but that's how it is. Typical stage 1 car = ~250awhp. Typical stage 2 = ~275-300awhp depending on tune. Most would call my car or anything on the stock turbo above typical stage 2, "stage 2 +." Stupid I know, but what can ya do? I do like to use it sometimes though, especially at the track. The ls1 owners around here have caught onto the lingo because there are so many subies and evos up here, and when I tell them my car is stage 2 they think their bolt on ls1 is going to walk me
