Pull on the bracket while you tighten. You are only supposed to loosen the bolt just barely enough to just barely squeeze the bracket in.

Pulling the plastic covers off isn't nearly as scary as it sounds. It's seriously just "pop, pop, pop" and they're off. You don't have to replace all the hardware like I did if your original bolts are still in good shape, but you'd have to inspect them to be sure. I'd highly recommend inspecting if you have one bolt that wont tighten up. The way the plastic and carpet are laid out, there's just no way to get back there with a wrench.

Chase from Apex was super nice and he got in me in touch with Windrestrictor directly, they were also super cool and super nice. Instead of a Flat Head screwdriver the folks at Windrestrictor told me to use a "wedge" and I couldn't think of anything that was sturdy enough to use as a wedge, I figured if the screw driver didn't work and it is pretty sturdy, why would a wedge. My wife found some hard plastic wedges/shims I had bought to install and level a toilet a few years ago in the closet (but never used). I put two of them back to back and slid them in as tight as I could get them and it did the trick, the bolt started to tighten right up.

I'm kicking around one of these too. The kids hate the wind in the back seat. That said, I still haven't heard a lot about the change in wind for rear seat passengers (windows up and windows down.) Anyone have further insight?

Also, I checked out the ordering page on one of the vendor sites, man that's complex! You can get lights but then you get to pay extra for a power plug and a light switch? C'mon!! I can't imagine someone buying a lit version of this and NOT wanting y'know...power? A switch to turn off the lights, especially if you're backing up and would like to actually see out the back? I don't get it, please explain. It's a shame about the glare mentioned previously as well, I wonder if I could pay (more) for an anti-glare coating

I'd really like to help the kids out, but it's got to be an intelligent choice.

Thanks,

Tib

Ok, I finally had someone in the back seat the other day and they stated they were still getting plenty of wind. I originally thought that maybe it would really help the back seat area, but now believe it doesn't make that big of difference.

When I ordered mine, i got the cirg plug plus the dimmer. Did not use either one. The lighted wind restrictor comes with its on wiring. You can either wire direct so that it only comes on with the ignition or do as i did and wire to a switch so that I can control when to turn off and on. As to backing up, it will not interfere with that as it is not like looking into a light bulb etc. Hope this helps. You will receive alot of compliments with the restrictor with the way it looks!

Thanks Joe. The fact that it doesn't really help rear seat passengers pretty much rules it out for me. Unless it does the job as advertised, it's just another shiney add-on that serves no purpose for me. While I like shiney add-ons, there are some that are higher on my list. Guess I'll just have to keep the top up when the kids are back there :(

If others have a different take, please feel free to chime in!

Thanks again Joe!

Jim

I too am glad to hear this as there is a debate between me, the wife and the kids as to getting the deflector or the sports bar....dont think that both would look good on the car. If the deflector does not serve the purpose then the decision is easy.

I wish I would have popped the cover off first too! I don't know about the rest of you but I stripped the head on one side just trying to work it loose. After that I pulled the cover and discovered that the factory used locktite. Now I am still trying to figure out how to get the stripped bolt out.

Anyone have a suggestion?

I look back and sure enough, the bolt for the rear boot cover fell right off. After inspecting the bolt a bit, I noticed that the bottom fourth of the threading was all stripped. Also, I was not about to try fishing around back there for the nut so I went to my local ACE and replaced all the hardware.

Tip for those installing it, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't have rushed it. Pop the panels off that cover the seat belt coils. Pull straight up and they come right off. The center panel takes a bit more elbow grease so kick off your shoes and stand on the rear seat. That will give you enough leverage to pull that off as well. Then unscrew the boot cover lugs being careful not to let the nut fall down into the crevice or you'll have to replace it. Put a 1/4" lock washer in front of the nut to get it to bite down when you tighten.

I'd suggest inspecting the threading because even the one bolt that would tighten down was showing signs of stripping. I couldn't find hex head screws so I went with Phillips instead, just make sure the caps are round. The ones I got were 1/4" - 20 x 1 1/4" long. I put flat washers in front of the plastic spacer to mimic the shape of the factory bolt. With all the replacement hardware, everything buttoned down nicely.

Sorry I didn't take pics of everything. I needed to make sure I left time to get packed for a road trip over the long weekend.
