One way to tell if you need a Radar detector,
If you are passing everything on the road you need one.
If everything on the road is passing you then you don't need one.

Open a savings account with the $300 you'll spend on a radar detector and siphon $15-30 / mo into it.

Learn to drive the speed limit
Learn to drive with traffic above the speed limit
Learn the local LEO traps
If you happen to be caught speeding, spend the money from the above savings account on an attorney.
If you don't happen to be caught speeding, reward yourself with a nice mod

Once you learn self control, it can be beneficial in other areas of life as well. Learn to control yourself and become your own master.

When you feel like going beyond the safe speed limits, book some time at a local track. In that way, me and my children are safe on the roads you're on, and you get to go fast in an environment where you can only hurt yourself.

Radar guns r close range. By the time ur detector goes off it's to late. Laser guns r much further range. So get a laser jammer. They are not illegal in Ny as far as I know. Radar jammers are. Idk about ur state. Check Te laws

I will check that app out. I use Waze some times its an app for traffic and road hazards and police details/speed traps which users can input. Its from google works well uses google map info for its mapping and live traffic. Also zooms in and out automatically with your speed to show/cover a bigger area as you cover ground quicker.

Having one doesn't affect how I drive. On the interstate I typically only roll 5 over and no more than 10 if that's the flow of the traffic. But it's nice to get a warning before everyone starts slamming on the brakes (even people that aren't speeding do it) when they see a cop.

I use one while using the app WAZE. WAZE is the social GPS where people report accidents, hazards, and police. using the 2 together is pretty helpful.

My radar detector saves me about once every three months. Other than that, it's just a tool I use along with technique and situational awareness to "make time" when I need to on the highway.
Laser detectors only tell you to start reaching for the wallet- you are DONE.

Agreed. I have had a detector along for almost every one of the miles I've driven in my life.

Get one, learn how to use it. It's a tool in the toolkit. It's not voodoo. It's only a waste of time or money if you are unwilling to learn how to use it.

I would say mine have paid for themselves at least once every couple of years. When I was younger..... they paid for themselves a lot more often than that.

As for the "if an officer sees it, you're more likely to get the ticket".... true enough. But
A) having it means you're less likely to be having that conversation
B) if you can't make it disappear before the officer is walking up to the car (without him seeing you and thinking you're a threat of some sort)... you haven't practiced the "disappearing radar detector" move enough.

I would no sooner run without a detector than run without windshield wipers.... only useful in a small set of circumstances, but SUPER useful when those circumstances come along.

Studies have shown that radar detector owners are safer drivers, too. Strange, but true.

Had an escort installed about a month ago. I dont go more than 10 over the speed anyway, but it is a cool toy.

If anything it makes me more aware of my speed and my surroundings. Also makes me think of Midnight Club LA (PS3 game).
