I'm surprised that this styling war hasn't happened yet, unless it happened before my time

It already did. I think it was a poll related to favorite generation of Camaro. It's all in fun if you ask me. If everyone liked the same stuff, be it cars or football (Hi Moose!) or whatever, it would be pretty boring.

I love the 4th gens. The '98-02s were some of the meanest looking cars ever build, especially the LS1 WS6. If there was no 5th gen in the offing, I would jump on one of these. |

You guys are off by two years; the typical lifespan of any new car is seven years.
As for the "retro" styling, I have to say I'm on the side of the contemprary perspective. What makes the 5thgen so easily understood in relation to the late 60's era Camaros is the fact that it looks like a Camaro. I'll admit, at first I thought it was a tad retro, then I got a look at this picture (http://www.motivemagazine.com/emAlbu...camaro-003.jpg) and my perspective changed quite a bit.

Best way to describe it is that it has familial traits with it's ancestor. You can see they're related, but when you put them side by side they are obviously two distinct looking vehicles. One could never really be confused for the other. (Unlike the Challenger...) "Retro Inspired' people, "Retro INSPIRED". LOL |

yup, it is all about family resemblance here. Each generation has at least some references to generations before it. The 5th gen has a lot, because it has a long, proud history to draw on. The Challenger, on the other hand, is a clone of the 1970 model. It is retro.
Also, I'm a little sad we have no one giving a shout out to the third gen. It sounds like no one hates it, but no one loves it either. |

^I like the third gen. I like every generation. But the fourth gen is easily the one I like least.
