I was always taught NOT to use the parking brake in freezing weather due to the (very) remote chance that the inner workings of the drum (as most cars with rear discs have a drum inside for the parking brake) could gather enough ice and snow to keep the friction surfaces from releasing, I just always leave my manual vehicles in gear when parked. Guess I just don't truxt (or use) the parking brake. On the other hand, I suppose a slipping clutch could present another problem with that method...

Yes, but you know how many idiots would purposely leave their cars in neutral while parked on a hill just so they could use remote start? And then not only will they possibly allow their car to roll into someone else or someone's property, they'll sue the manufacturer for enabling their stupidity. And thanks to our legal system that hates the idea of personal responsibility, they'll win.

Very true.

Guess we'll find out soon with the aftermarket companies making remote starts for manuals. Lets just hope idiots don't ruin it for the rest of us.

My wife's '06 Cadillac DTS performance sedan ( auto trans ) has the remote start feature and I have it disabled. I would never, ever have a remote start feature enabled on a car that is parked in a garage in my home. At 52 I have personally witnessed far too many instances where Murphy's Law has come true. Watching this video reinforces my belief that if it is possible, it will happen. Ed M.

Friends, this is the first and only time you will ever see "DTS" and "performance" appear next to each other in a sentence. Wow. Such an historic occasion.

You can't play this game. Of course there are infinite amount of idiots with cars. So what? Are we going to say "no cars over 300hp b/c just think how reckless they will be?"

No.

I park my truck in the garage when i know it will snow.. and i don't use remote start until the garage door is open for obvious reasons... but I guess i don't understand your reasoning, it's not easy to start the car, at least for mine you have to press the button twice for 2 seconds each, plus being an automatic it has to be in park no matter what to start. i honestly can't see a possible way for the car to move, unless your gear selector was worn and that would be dangerous no matter what.

or maybe some people need to break out there drivers ed books and give themselves a quick review, because if you are parked on a hill all you have to do is cut your wheel to where if it did roll it wouldn't go anywhere except maybe a foot until the tire hit the curb and thus stopping the car

yes accidents do happen because of mechanical failure but with newer cars it just doesn't happen that much anymore. people point out that if you use the e brake and leave the car in gear it won't go anywhere, not true things fail and the possibility is there that it will. this is also true with automatics i have seen automatic cars parked on a hill and the tranny park broke this leaving the car basically in neutral with no brake on. so yes the chance of mechanical failure is always there no matter what you drive. so for all you auto guys out there that have remote start don't you think you should have a safety switch in there as well to prevent that function unless the e brake is set?

until then that's why there is this bumper sticker lol
