Mine failed 2 weeks ago, a beard came out of the driver side muffler. After a visit to the dealer, who ordered a new exhaust system, I pulled out the "beard". Despite the removal of the expulsed wool there was still a good quantity left visible deep inside the muffler. Don't just settle at pulling out the filaments, have these mufflers replaced

Are there any effects of the wool coming out?
Happened twice to me, first time solved itself, 2 weeks ago it came out after 20 miles of high speed, i just pulled it out with my hands and haven't noticed any difference.

the "steel wool" came out of mine once and the problem never happened again and I have run my car way harder than 99.9% of people here. It has 800 miles at VIR on the clock.

same thing just happened to me. 15k miles , no mods. Just pulled two big clumps out. Reminds me of the old glass pack days. I think we are blowing out the fiberglass from the muffler. Just called my dealer yesterday about coming in to replace the isolator. Calling him back now to see about this.

My dealer said no problem on replacing the muffler.

Does this problem only effects guys running without the exhaust fuse pulled or is it not a factor so far? Just curious to know if it makes a difference or not since I run my exhaust with fuse pulled which directs most of the exhaust gases thru the outside bypass part of the muffler and I see most of the pics show the inside part having the issue.

I know I'm super late to this, but I just bought a 13 1LE yesterday...
I was looking around at some stuff in the garage tonight and noticed this issue in both mufflers on my dual mode...

Any second owners had any luck with a dealership or GM helping you out?

Very old thread. This is a common occurrence with OEM mufflers. It is actually a good thing in our case. The muffler will still work. The interior insulation gets worn and starts to shed. Over time your OEM exhaust will actually get a tad louder, but there should be no concern over the packing material shedding. GM/Chevy uses this insulation to maintain their minimum standard on exhaust sound levels for new cars. The exhaust on ours is louder than most cars, but even with our model GM has an established limit on sound level.
