I bought a Fiat 500 Abarth and its a great fun to drive car in fact it is the most fun to drive car I have ever owned imo including the Camaro SS I use to have yea its not as fast as that was but it did feel better handling turns and the sounds that it makes. The ride isn't bad at all for a small car either yea it does get moved around when its windy on the highway. But if your easy on the gas you can easily get 35 to 40 mpg. I average around 32 in mixed driving with a lil bit of spirited driving. Doesn't hurt to go take a test driver either. This is just my recommendation for a fun to drive car that gets great gas mileage. If your willing to wait the fiesta St should be coming out soon as well.

Take a look at a VW GTI. It has a turbo 4 and will be a blast to drive with the 6 speed, or get the 6 speed DSG which is amazing. You should be able to average 26 mpg and get over 32 on the hwy. The GTI has been on Car and Drivers top 10 for a long time for a reason. Drive on and I think you will be surprised. I have the R32 and I Love It.

I daily drive a subaru wrx 2013. It's very quick for what it is and it handles great from the factory. I put a little money into some sways and bushings for it and its an absolute beast in the corners. I average 27-28 on the highway on my commute to work

Main reason I chose it was the awd system and what the car is. It snows here so that was a big factor.

I'd pickup a BRZ if I could get another car - 30mpg, supposed to be great to drive and they are making great progress in the aftermarket

I'll say that I've really enjoyed my Sonic.

It's got the Turbo, so it has more torque. It's peppy, and definitely not an SS. Handles pretty well, too.

41 MPG on longer trips is pretty nice. I get 31-32 driving around town though.

Try nissan sentra. I bought one for only 15900 30/39 with a seven year warranty 120k miles brand new.

Now we are comparing fiat 500 to a Camaro & a SS Camaro at that.............I will use some self restraint here......

OP I see a lot of cars being suggested but are any of them that much less expensive than a Camaro?

Is MPG your only concern?

Do any of them have the styling and good looks of a Camaro? Especially if you get a 'vert?

You already have a 5th gen, take a Sonic for a test drive, I did and ended up with a 2nd Camaro!!!!

If I HAD to get an inexpensive good gas economy car I would buy an ALtima. Sad but true. Thank god this day will never come because SUV is my second vehicle and always will be.
I have to disagree with the assertion that the US can't build a good economy car.

Currently, Chevrolet has the most fuel efficient gas vehicle available in the states in the Chevy Cruze Eco. 42 MPG highway, 39 MPG with the Auto. This Summer the Cruze diesel gets launched with a starting price of 25K that gets 46 MPG hwy, 700 range on a full tank of fuel and it's an auto with leather seats.

I understand gas is expensive today, but there are other things to consider other than economy. If there weren't everyone would drive a Prius. Have you driven an Altima with these awful CVT's? They are the equivalent of a soggy sandwich as to fun. The new Accord gets the same econ as the Altima, also uses a CVT, but is far better than the Nissan while still being as fun as the dentist.

Fords new Fusion is more fuel efficient than Altima, but also lacks the fun aspect plus the interior is as bland as the Fusion it replaced. The new Malibu certainly isn't trying to get the highest possible economy, rather focusing on building the best all-around car. They fell short IMO b/c they listened a bit too much to what the critics panned the last Malibu for, not realizing that in the critics eyes, NOTHING that sports a bowtie will be warmly received. The best thing the 34 MPG hwy Malibu has going for it, the 2.5 liter and the 2.0 liter engines they share w/ the Caddy ATS. Wards Automotive named those engines to it's ten best list, you won't find the Altima, Fusion mill in there. You will find the Accords engine there.

Again, why people think the Altima is so great is a mystery to me. Nissan builds boring, cheap cars. Don't agree? Look at the flagship Maxima, compare it to the Impala.... I dare you.

The all new 2014 Impala has the most power (305 hp) combined w/ the most efficient 29 hwy mpg, plus they will also use the 2.5 to get 31 and and eco model that will get 35 MPG hwy. I'll say it again, Impala has class leading economy.

You can believe what the auto critics say or you can drive an Altima, Fusion and a Malibu back to back to back, then tell me which you'd rather drive. The 'bu isn't my favorite car by quite a bit, but compared to those to high mpg rolling penalty boxes I'd pick it as my communter 5 days a week and drive my SS on the weekend. At any rate, what you posted is highly inaccurate.
