Made me think twice about buying the car because I want to get the car and have it sound the way I want without getting ripped off on a cat back exhaust or worrying about voiding my warranty.

If you have an aftermarket performance part that causes an engine failure, GM can deny the warranty repair. It does not matter whether GM Performance or someone else manufactured the part, and it doesn't matter who installed the part. Your vehicle warranty covers the car as sold. It does not cover after-market parts and it does not cover damage caused by aftermarket parts.

That's not to say that you won't be more likely to get the 'benefit of the doubt' from a dealer who sold and installed the part. But if there's no doubt that the aftermarket part caused the problem, they can and will deny coverage.
