I am doing my first oil change today and I have 1280 miles on it. My first oil change is free so I am happy about that. Also going to do the rear end fluid while I am there I also get to drive it on the lift

I rebuilt my son's 96 Z28 (LT1) and we were VERY detailed about keeping it clean. I actually bought special rags to prevent lint. Every part was cleaned in a sonic parts cleaner at the machine shop. Hell, we even used latex gloves during assembly. Cranked right up. Loaded the rings per the rebuild manual.
CHANGED THE OIL AT 500 MILES!
Took the filter to the machine shop where they have a filter cutter and checked out what was inside. After seeing the very small metal particles in both the bottom of the filter and embedded in the filter media, there is no doubt in my mind that the oil should be changed at 500 miles on ANY new engine, regardless of the builder.

I paid 37K for my SS...I can afford 75 bucks to change the oil.

Yeah, I completely understand. I went to the dealer to have mine changed at 1000 miles and they told me that I was crazy. But I insisted and they changed it. I watched to make sure. The mechanic in the back came to talk with me about setting the DIC, suppossedly they can set either to 3000 miles or whenever the computer oil life system says, he stated to me that it was always good to changed the oil early on a new car. Good to see someone so close to me on here. I live in Oxford.

I'm not "old school", I'm just old. I did the "nice, nice" on the engine for the 1st 1,500 miles and got the oil and filter changed today at 1,700. I'll do the next at around 3,800-3,900 and then at 6,000 and every 3,000 thereafter. It is a cheap insurance policy to keep the engine clean.

I have four cars and have changed my oil for the last 20+ years.

For the past 4 years I have been changing the oil every 6 months since I only put about 6,000 miles during that time period.

I'm going to start changing the oil once a year as long as I don't exceed 15,000 miles per car (which I won't).

I also use Mobil 1 Delvac 15W/40 in all my cars and have been for 4 years.

I won't be using this oil for the new Camaro yet (cause I'm scared )but eventually once it's at about 10,000 miles or more I will use it.

For the Camaro I will perform the hard break in and change oil for the first time at 50 miles.

I will then keep the hard break in until about 500 miles and then change the oil once more.

After that I will change the oil every 6 months or 5,000 miles.

I can offer no scientific proof for the above recommendations.
