They are very specific on what is allowed, and after inspection and dyno to make sure they are in compliance, the engines are sealed and numbered.

If a team needs to make a repair that would break the seal, it must be done in front of an IMSA official. Once the repair is made and approved, the engine is resealed. If a seal is broken and not observed and approved by IMSA, the engine is deemed illegal and not eligible to compete.

There is no limit on cams or displacement other than what is OEM available. If GM wasn't allowed any mods beyond balancing to the 6.2 liter LS3, it surprised me that the LS7 was allowed.
Why are you surprised? See your own statement above in bold. Also what would the Trans Am "revision" be without a Z/28 and Boss?

I was at the event, they dominated, nose to tail until the 2nd Stevenson car got caught in the accident. The 18" tires are a class requirement. These cars are factory prep'd level cars. Fit/finish is fantastic with top flight drivers. Steering wheel looks close to a F1 wheel.

Awesome pictures! Silver and blue look good on that car! Can't wait to finally watch this race, hopefully Wednesday when it's on TV. I asked when it would be available online on IMSA's facebook page, and they responded saying it should be up on their website shortly after it airs on TV on Wednesday. Just to let everyone know...

At least I think that's what they are saying, as the car is listed in red at the top of the page and they define red as last year of production and eligibility. I am not sure why that is since they allowed the FR500 Mustangs to run several years after Ford switched to the Boss program.

Don't get me wrong, I love the competition in the GS class. To me it's the closest thing to the old Trans Am glory days of the late 60's early 70's. I was just as disenchanted with Ford when they ran a special 5.0L in the FR500s while the street car was a 4.6L slug. I was just stunned when I heard IMSA allowed the LS7 in the class. But there are many things that IMSA is doing that is upsetting not just fans, but also competitors. I hope they get it straight soon!
I'm not sure exactly why they went with the Z/28, but I'm glad they did. I'd speculate that it's because they wanted their race car for the street top of the line Camaro to actually race. Plus, Chevy seems to be putting more factory support into a few of the IMSA teams this year. The fact that the race car is so close to the showroom stock car is very cool and I'm sure they know that and use it for marketing. I wouldn't be surprised if they ran the Z/28.R again next year, regardless of what the official status says for it this year.

Regarding the engine, I'd be more disappointed if they DIDN'T run production engine, no matter what the car is. Plus, the race announcers were talking about how the Z/28's (at least one of them) were having some overheating issues when running in dirty air, so they aren't without their problems. They certainly aren't running away from the field with qualifying times either.

The Camaro guys were complaining about having to run such a "skinny tire on such a heavy car." I heard them say the car weighed 3400 lbs.
Tires I guess are 275/35/18 from the stat sheet. I guess they would like to have run a much wider tire all around.

They might have to handicap the Camaros with more weight or something to keep them from winning all the time.

I watched the race; pretty convincing win for the Z/28. Is this the car GM sells, or an old style marketing ploy? I have a Boss 302, and it's closely related to the Race car(s), but I could actually buy from Ford a Boss Racing Car, the Boss 302R and 302S. Could I buy this car (or similar) from GM? That would be cool.

It's very close. The exceptions being per the Continental Series rules; tire & wheel size, cage, brakes (downgrade), engine (detuned), gutted interior...the Z/28 you can buy is actually a better car with a warranty (that allows for tracking).

Does anyone know about other potential mods that may have been incorporated on the Z/28 race car? For example, the FR500S has welded seams to add strength and rigidity to the chassis. I'm wondering if they did anything like that on the Z/28 race chassis?

Possibly since they had to add a safety roll-cage. There was a pretty lengthy write up in the recent issue of Racer magazine. Racer.com

FR500S was a factory built package. The z28 used this year isn't. They fab'd the entire car, sure they bought a 14 SS body in white and built it up. I heard from team members they had a hard time just getting spoilers and splitters themselves. There were a couple of non sponsored camaros but were no where close to the finish and professional built Stevenson. Our street cars make HP, and with the series spec tires I'm sure things are pretty even. I saw a 370Z draft a Boss302 on the straight and pass it like it was standing still. I bet they start adding balast or limiting air intake if one team has a clear advantage. Sebring will reward a fast car, several tracks will reward handling/braking cars.
