To oversimplify, it has to do with the timing of the exhaust pulses and how they come together in a single pipe.

Ever notice that generally speaking, all v8s sound the same (deep rumble), all v6s (higher pitched whine) sound the same etc?

I hope the muffler will in the middle of the car after the car is done. but.... I would not think so. With the mufflers in the middle of the car, it sounds the best IMO

I believe that camshaft and intake tuning also has effect on how a car's exhaust sounds. I don't think it would be possible to make an LS-motor, of similar displacement, ever sound like a 5.0 Mustang engine. I remember reading when the Mod' motor first came out in the Mustang the intake manifold was changed to help to tune the exhaust sound closer to the old 5.0s.
