Anyhow .... I'm now looking for a 37 to 40 inch LCD or LED-LCD TV ..... really I perfer Samsung but Panasonic and Sony would do, anyone know any good web sites with a crackhead discount
If you check out the ratings at cNet www.cnet.com you will find the Panasonic's were rated the best and give the best bang for the buck on the Plasma side, their LCD's rate well also.

I used to be a Sony die-hard until flat screens and for me Sony just does not have that bounce it once had over other TV's, they still make very good TV's but to me they have lost that "class of their own" in everything but the prices.

watch out for the online buys, some of the return policies have high numbered dead pixels, friend bought an lcd tv online for $20 cheaper than local retail and it had 3 bad pixels, the online stores policy required 7 dead pixels for no charge return or replacement

That used to be a good fomula for pre-HD TV's and in a few years should be again but right now there is a pretty big difference between a cheap HD TV and a good one, and even a noticeable difference between the good ones and the best ones.

It would be a shame to pay for a new TV and get not a lot more picture quality than you had before, in fact, you can actually end up with a worse picture with a really cheap set. I have seen some really really bad HT TV's and have seen some medium priced ones, like from Panasonic, LG, Samsung, and Pioneer that look darn good, that is where I would set my target price range, mid-range from a well known maker.

Once you spot a couple you like the two most important things I suggest to people is #1 - See it in person! and #2 - Read the reviews from places like www.avforums.com , www.cnet.com, and there are plenty of other sites.

Places like Amazon have user reviews, same for many on places, that is also good to check out as you are getting the customer side of the story and not just the techy stuff.

Replacing in 4-5 years is still a good target range for a typical main TV.

I agree, when I say buy cheap I didn't necessarily mean "the cheapest"

I love my pioneer plasma elite, it had the best picture by far, mainly the black stood out. But I have seen some LCD's less than half the price of what I paid for the elite that had great pictures. I have also seen some higher end 120 Hz that looked like crap depending on the input. The research can be daunting.

No doubt Pioneer made the best Plasma before they decided to stop making Plasma at all, now Panasonic, in ratings at least, is the #1 plasma.

That is the understatement of the year about the research, unless you wanted to just go plop down a couple grand and hope for the best, it took a LOT of research to get up to speed in HD, HT, Plasma vs LCD vs DLP (almost dead), back lighting, black levels, contrast ratio, viewing angle, aspect ratio options and the list goes on...

Panasonic makes the Plasma for Pioneer now, http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-98...?tag=mncol;txt All the tech's at DandH.com have Panasonics except a small handful that have the insane 84" Mitsubishi Diamond TV's and even they state they wish Panasonic made the same size...I recommend Panasonic.

If someone is going plasma, Panasonic is all I ever suggest, there are other good ones I know but I have had nothing but great experience with Panasonic plasma sets, I have 2 of them.
