Mechanics? I hope your using that term veeerrry loosely! Granted, they do have SAE certified mechanics and service managers on staff (who actually know whats going on) but I doubt those high paid individuals are the ones changing the oil in your car. Service "techs" are the ones doing the changing. At least that's the way it was done in the last two separate dealerships I went to. I had some issues with my car and while being fixed I had them "service" it. They rolled it over to there oil change service bay and the guys there had no SAE arm badge on there uniform. They put the wrong oil in, fill level was a quart low, they did not do the inspection and failed to tighten the oil cap! After that, I have done it differently ever since. I buy the oil (Mobil1 Racing synthetic 5W30), I take it into the oil change place not the dealership and I watch them like a hawk. Most of these oil change guys are not highly skilled mechanics by any sense of the word. They are simply technicians trained to change your oil.

Excellent advice. Many people have no idea that oil formulations and more specifically the additive packages in the oil have changed radically over the last ten years. The additive package in an oil has very specific chemicals and heavy metals that help the ability of the oil to handle load, scuffing and break down along with a host of other important factors. Some of these are, Boron, Molly, phosphorus, Chlorine and Zinc. Some racing blends that stipulate " For Off Road Use Only" have these and other additive packages that the older oils had and are far better overall. If you want to learn just about everything you need to know and a lot more than you ever thought existed about motor oils go to this web site.

This is the most honest statement I have read in a while- as someone who has worked in dealerships, many of the oil change guys are trained enough to change oil. In at least 1 instance, the guy forgot to put oil back in the car he serviced (one of my customers). The lady drove it off and called back in about a half hour, sitting on the side of the road with a locked up engine. You really can't trust just anyone with your car, you have to be vigilant. If you find someone you trust, stick with them.

To mamaro: You should thank your dealer for using a CARQUEST filter it is a better quality filter than what came on your car when you purchased it, micron of paper better than oe for filtering out more dirt and will do the job not only better but longer than the oe filter would.

O.K., between this photo and the one of you with your pants dropped "getting a little" from your Camaro with a phallic purple looking "thing" in the background (the handle to your California Duster...yeah, right), I'd have to say that I'm in good company.

Speaking of oil weights I 've been using Mobil 1 15W/40 Diesel oil in all my cars (honda, ford, mazda) for the past 4 years with no adverse affect.

I don't know if I will have the courage to try this with my new Camaro.

does it say on your paper that they would fill fluids?I know alot of people just assume that fluids get re-filled,look to see if they advertise that before you go charging in there,as for the oil i believe that you can run 5w30 or 10w30 not a huge difference there but again if you requested 5w30 you should get it

I work in service at a chevy dealership and what it does when you get a oil change here it will only bill out 5qrts of oil so you safe on that just to be safe i would check the oil lvl.some dealers are useing performax oil filters now so what i would do is ask for a ac delco filter. But here it will allways show 10w30..what dealership are you taking it to?
