I questioned the whole gas thing myself and came across this site a while ago. Hope it helps and it also shows stations who sell top tier.

I have so many OSHA and Haz-Mat certificates it makes my head swirl. I have certificates from the Manhattan project...
So I know for a fact it's a need to know basis what the hirer-ups tell you.

And the guys filling the trucks have no more idea of what they are putting in than the drivers.
I worked at a tank farm in Blue Island when going to college doing minor maintenance and things like painting, and the drivers mixed their own fuel in the truck.

In the FAQs there's this:

Quote:
"3. What does it cost to sign up for the TT program?

There is an annual fee based on the number of service stations owned by the fuel marketer."
There's nothing wrong with them charging a fee for setting and maintaining the standard, but a lot of smaller chains won't bother or can't justify the added expense to be "top tier" certified, especially if the cost of certification is expensive. I'm guessing it is if they aren't posting any hard numbers on their website. The old "if you have to ask how much, it's too expensive for you".

I have driven across this beautiful country on Route 66 twice. I tried to at least buy gas from known stations. There were times I could not. And, as you head west, the octane drops considerably....finding 93 was next to impossible. The moral to this story is: reguardless of what I bought, my mileage stayed pretty consistant. So.............thats my old geezer fact of the day. Take it for what its worth.

Altitude matters. Higher octane not needed.

^^ This.

People never factor in elevation. When I used to drive from AZ to TX, El Paso, New Mexico runs 86 88 and 90 octane. Used to freak me out. In AZ, we have 91. 93 isnt needed out here for stock engines. Obviously not the same for modified engines. Which is why I run 16oz of Torco every fill up.

Understood. Point is, reguardless of fuel brand or octane......mileage stayed consistant.
And yes, driving the mountains I averaged 35mpg.

This short video explains top tier gas.
I don't know where you got this info from?
I get best mileage from Shell or Sunoco, 1 top tier 1 not. Go figure

Shell Super Premium and Sunoco 260 were the only available pump 102 octane fuels I ever saw that met the early L88/ZL1 requirements for their incredible 12.5:1 compression.

As they both sell race fuels to meet certain requirements, I'd consider them both to be top tier. Sunoco is currently one of the largest suppliers of race fuel in the world.

Bring back Sunoco 260 to the local station. Some folks STILL drive L-88s and need the good gas.
