A detector detector just picks up the local oscillator your receiver uses. Just do your homework when buying a radar detector. Some are harder for the radar detector detector to pick up than others. A $59 Cobra is going to glow like a nuke while you might be able to breeze right past a LEO while using a Redline or V1. Check the specs and do some research before buying.

From what I have read in other places my detector (Escort 9500 ix) can be detected by the radar detector detector.

They know who has one turned on. I lost one in Canada, same law, hefty fine. I tossed the ticket, didn't tell the wife. A month later I got a warning letter that Canada was about to put a lien on my house and my wife was the one who opened the letter. BUSTED.

I go through VA all the time

I just leave mine unplugged. I know a guy who got pulled in VA for having a radar detector running, and the trooper said they have 20K worth of equipment in their cars to detect other radars. So aslong as you're at least unplugged they won't be able to see that you have one in your car.

I've never experienced a problem

Buy a cheap/broken one from a thrift store or pawn shop. When you see the lights behind you hide your good one and give up the POS.

I use mine mostly as an insurance to help remind me to slow down. These cars are very easy to speed in. I check myself all the time to try to get back down to the limit, but it is so easy to get lost in the driving moment/experience and not notice. Sometimes traffic is to think to use cruise control itself, plus I refuse to ride in a pack of cars. Either pass me, or move over, but don't ride beside or right on my tail. Packs cause accidents.

The way the stupid law is written they can actually take it from you if it is anywhere that can be easily accessed by your or a passenger. So the trunk seems to be the only place it would technically not be taken from you.

It is insane. I've lived here all my life and the police here have just a little too much time on there hands and they just pull you over for anything.

Yes i was surprised when i first found this out too since california makes as much as they possibly can illegal. but from what iv heard from multiple people is anything just detecting radars/lasers is fine but anything jamming or stopping radars/lasers are what is illegal. i couldnt see the radar detector business being as big as it is if they were illegal everywhere.
