I never researched if/when GM fixed the issue, which I believe was vendor-related quality/finish/machining. I just seen where people under warranty had to go with stock GM parts if they were still under warranty and wanted it covered- and, that at the time, they were putting in the same (defected) part again. I just stayed away from all of that and went with the supposedly proven Melling Oil Pump version.

Looks like I wasn't so lucky. Replaced pump; now Low Oil Pressure; engine damage. Complete dis-assembly needed. Will know more in a few weeks.

Days like this is why I'm glad I have a kegerator with some Fat Tire on tap. Gonna get a work out tonight.

Thanks. But it was already heavily built/forged. Both upper & lower ends. Hell hath no fury such as an oil pump with no oil pressure. Engine comes out in 2 weeks or so. I'll know more then after its taken apart.

After seeing some close ups of the poor machining of the oil pump in another thread I would be much more comfortable with a blueprinted Melling pump.

In my case I noticed the oil pressure a little low or stuck in place, can't recall which but something made me nervous. I figured the bypass was stuck partially open and gave it a quick stab of the throttle while idling (a little risky) to shoot the rpms up briefly. That seemed to knock it loose. No issues since. Someone later posted that was recommended in a TSB.

If your pressure relief valve was sticking and you just happened to free it back up; your on borrowed time. I was surprised at how many forum members had these failures, and I've been on this site for over 6 1/2 years.

At least i do have a brand new Melling oil pump now; just need a rebuilt engine to go with it. Gotta go pour me another Fat Tire draft just thinking about it.

I'm a bit confused. I have a stock 2011 SS with 19,000 miles. Should I consider replacing the oil pump?, Or is this for heavily modded cars?.

I can't remember if this issue extends past the 2010's, but I thought it did. it is for both L99 & LS3. Happens to stock and heavily modded cars. Part is covered under the 5 yr/100,000 mile warranty; after that it is out-of-pocket. I also seriously doubt i would have been covered with all my mods even though they had nothing to do with oil pump failure (pressure relief valve was stuck open).

If you do any engine mods, and your already in there, definitely replace stock GM oil pump with a Melling equivalent. Changing out a working oil pump is a tough decision, and kinda costly. it is basically all labor cost, part is only couple hundred bucks.
